6 DAY 6 – Walking Surfaces/Stairways What you need for DAY 6: Clear aisles and passageways. Level floors, no holes or obstacles. Clearly marked walkways. Guardrails on stairways and elevated working surfaces. Fall protection where needed. 7’ of head room in aisles and stairs.

7 DAY 6 - Walking Surfaces/Stairways This pallet is in a walking aisle. It is an obstacle to people moving about or evacuation in case of an emergency.

8 DAY 6 - Walking Surfaces/Stairways At this construction site floors are covered with broken glass and electric cables, creating a tripping hazard.

9 DAY 6 - Walking Surfaces/Stairways This stairway to a workstation has steps cluttered with debris from lumber processing. A slip, trip or fall is likely to happen here.

10 Guardrails This elevated working surface (above 4 ft.) doesn’t have a guardrail on the open side.

11 Marked Walkways If you have forklifts or vehicles operating in your facility, dedicated pedestrian walkways should be clearly marked.

12 DAY 6 - Walking Surfaces/Stairways Now, complete this section of the checklist:

13 DAY 7 – Lighting What you need for DAY 7: Sufficient lighting in the work areas; day and night. Adequate security lighting in the parking area. Temporary lighting (when used) protected from breakage.

14 DAY 7 – Lighting Lighting in the stairwell is insufficient and poses a risk for trips and falls when workers walk down it.

15 DAY 7 – Lighting This worker at a sawmill regularly needs to sort lumber boards. Lighting is not adequate for him to see where he is stepping.

16 DAY 7 – Lighting Now, complete this section of the checklist:

17 DAY 8 – Chemical Safety What you need for DAY 8: Written hazard communication program A Hazard Communication Training Program L&I has a training kit available L&I has a training kit available A list of chemicals in use at your worksite Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for each chemical in use in your operation Properly labeled boxes, bottles, bags, tanks, etc.

20 Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Manufacturers and suppliers of products containing chemicals are required to provide you with MSDSs when you purchase the product. The MSDS must be kept in a location or on a computer that employees have easy access to. Your training should include how to read an MSDS – how to find information on chemical hazards and personal protective equipment.

21 DAY 8 – Chemical Safety Make sure that every chemical container at your worksite is properly labeled.

22 DAY 8 – Chemical Safety Now, complete this section of the checklist:

23 DAY 9 – Personal Protective Equipment What you need for DAY 9: Personal Protective Equipment hazard assessmentPersonal Protective Equipment hazard assessment Train employees to use PPE Keep documentation of the training Make sure employees wear PPE when required, such as: –Safety glasses, shoes with toe protection, hard hat, ear plugs, gloves, aprons, etc.

25 DAY 9 – Personal Protective Equipment These injuries could have been prevented by using hard hats and safety goggles…

26 DAY 9 – Personal Protective Equipment …like the ones shown here. Training and enforcing PPE use are actions necessary to complete the cycle of safety.

27 DAY 9 – Personal Protective Equipment To protect your hearing and your employees from excessive noise, these are some examples of available hearing protection.

28 DAY 9 – Personal Protective Equipment To protect the lungs of you and your employees from hazardous chemicals or dust, here are some examples of respirators available.

29 DAY 9 – Personal Protective Equipment To protect the hands and feet of you and your employees, here are some examples of gloves and boots available from safety equipment suppliers.

30 DAY 9 – Personal Protective Equipment Now, complete this section of the checklist:

31 DAY 10 – Portable Ladders What you need for DAY 10: Ladders in good condition –No missing parts, rungs –Steps dry, free of grease and oil No defective ladders in use Employees trained to climb with both hands free The right ladder for the job

32 DAY 10 – Portable Ladders Portable ladders are a piece of equipment used in almost any workplace: office, factory, shop, orchard, store, etc.

33 DAY 10 – Portable Ladders Extensive use and transportation of ladders may wear out its parts. Rungs and steps must be undamaged, clean and dry. This ladder cannot be used.

34 DAY 10 – Portable Ladders Sometimes the lack of training and safety awareness put workers into hazardous situations like the ones seen on these photos.
