Incan Culture Destination Part 1
2
Located from Columbia to Chile It was the largest native state to have ever existed
3
Most of the nation existed in the Himalayan Mountains (15-22 thousand feet high)… Which means COLD. 35 degrees BELOW zero. - Scientists are baffled by the Ican’s ability to survive in such a harsh climate dressed in primitive clothes.
4
One of the most sophisticated cultures Created some of the most advanced road systems to have ever existed (14,000 miles long)
5
Created advanced aqueducts that were carved into the mountain sides. Created advanced irrigation system that was built into the scene to keep crops growing Built walls WITHOUT mortar that are still standing today!
6
There were VERY religious people They had a bureaucratic system and form of communication (they would tie different color ropes into varied knots as a form of communication) Lang: They spoke their own unique tongue called Quechua No money. Gold was for aesthetics only: no $ value to it.
7
Jobs: Each gender and age had a certain job to perform. Children over the age of 5 were in charge of getting water where it needed to go. Adults farmed, cared for live stock, or were in the army. Women over the age of 50 weaved. Even people with disabilities were given jobs. Women: important to society. They were leaders and fighters as well as wives. They also watched worship.
8
They were polytheistic and practiced human sacrifices They worshipped the world around and it was crucial to their agriculture based lifestyle. Culchu: god of the rainbow, Illapu: god of weather, Inti: Sun god, Mama Kilya: godess of the moon, Mama Qoca: Sea Mother, Paca Mama: Earth Mother, Viracocha: Creator God
9
Key structure is Manchu Piccu. This temple is dedicated Inti and was most prized by the Icans. This temple is located in the city of Cuzco- wealthiest city in the nation
10
Ruled by the Emperor. Each emperor would build their new temple and new belongings. They were all descendants of the Sun god. The greatest ruler was Emperor Pachacuti 1438. He created an unique blend of socialism. Each village was responsible for what they could create. People would work for their living. Instead of earning money, they would earn food and clothing.
11
Gold ultimately led to their destruction In 1532 Spanish conquistadors (led by Francisco Pizarro) discovered them. He kidnapped emperor Atahualpa under a “peaceful” agreement. He made the people pay him $50 million in gold and then strangled their leader. They then entered the city and pillaged it. The Spanish destroyed all the structures and took all the gold. They burned everything to the ground and took everything. The Spanish found gardens of gold and stunning metal work.
