1 POR 1. expresses time during which an action takes place or its duration. – Pienso estudiar esta tarde por dos horas – I’m planning to study this afternoon for 2 hours. – Vamos al cine por la tarde. – We are going to the movies during the afternoon. – Always used with : por la mañana Por la tarde Por la noche When NO time is mentioned.

2 POR 2. expresses because of, in exchange for, on behalf of – Tengo que estar ausente de la clase por una emergencia. (because of) – ¿Quieres $10 por esta camisa? (any time money is given for something it is in exchange for) – ¿Lo hiciste por tu hermano? (for the sake of, on behalf of)

3 POR 3. expresses the object/goal of an action or a person being sought after – Venimos por ti a las dos. We’ll be there for you at 2 o’clock. – Los viajeros fueron por su equipaje. The travelers went for their luggage.

4 POR 4. Expresses motion: (through, by, along, around) – Anduve por el parque. I walked through the park. – Entraron por la puerta de embarque. They entered through the boarding gate. – Voy por la pista. I am going around the track. – Pasé por la casa a las dos. I passed by the house at 2:00.

5 POR 5. expresses the means or manner that an action is accomplished. ¿Mandaste los paquetes por correo? Did you send the packages by mail? Viaja por tren. She travels by train. Hicimos las reservaciones por teléfono. We made the reservations by phone.
