2 1. Unequal Treaties- Benefited Europe at China’s Expense 2. Extra Territoriality- British citizens accused of crimes had the right to a trial in British court instead of Chinese Court. 3. Taiping Rebellion- A movement led by Hong Xiuguan’s followers. 4. Boxer Rebellion- When Boxers attacked missionaries and Chinese to convert them to Christianity. 5. Treaty of Kanagawa- Allowed American ships to dock at Japanese ports. 6. Sino-Japanese War- Lasted only a few months and was a humiliating defeat for China.

3  All of china was being imperialized.  They were not allowed to trade with European countries for a long time  They were sheltered from the outside world.

4  The Qing Dynasty had control over China, but it slowly started losing power and influence when Britain wanted trade

5 China was now able to get goods and services that they didn’t have before, because they could now trade with the west. Their culture started to change a little, because they were now exposed to other thing. The British became happy because they made their trade equal; they used to five silver to China and receive tea, but now they’re giving opium and receiving tea.

6  The Chinese wanted silver, but there wasn’t any in the region, so they had to trade with the West  They also went through a time when many wanted Opium, and they had to get that from the British citizens in China were allowed to be tried in British courts instead of Chinese.  China soon after was forced to sign more treaties with Britain, France, the United States, and Russia.

7  The British were imperializing for economic and political reasons; they used treaties and unbalanced trade to influence the Chinese and slowly take over.

8  Some uprisings occurred as a result, like the Taiping Rebellion (followers of Hong Xiuquan who believed in the creation of “Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace”), where Hong & followers captured large territories in SE China & by 1853 controlled the city of Nanjing. They were eventually defeated by the Qing.

9  Britain gained control  China lost control

10  Made China a communist country.  Helped China economically.  China lost traditions
