2. Background Information for the Wenatchee Police Department The Wenatchee Police Department is 55 members strong, with 44 of the team members serving as sworn police officers. The Police Department is service oriented and encourages community-based partnerships to address critical safety and enforcement issues.

4. Patrol Division The 24 officers of the department’s Patrol Division provide services to our citizens 24-hours-a-day, every day of the year. Patrol officers in our agency respond to more than 19,000 calls for service each year. This does not include traffic stops or self-initiated contacts. Our officers are thoroughly trained for basic collision investigation, interview and interrogation techniques, and have attended crime scene investigation courses. Officers also receive regular training in defensive tactics, firearms, domestic violence and receive regular legal updates.

Interview Questions: Speaking from a law enforcement/CPS point of view regarding “Family Violence” What services does the organization offer? “Police departments don’t really offer that many services within themselves but do lead victims/families in the right direction. I have given people our domestic violence hotline out numerous times. We also give people information regarding classes, education, and resources (income) that may have been removed if someone was arrested”. What are your individual job duties and what does a typical day consist of? “As a police officer every day was different. There really wasn’t a typical day. Some days were crazier than others that’s for sure, but ‘routine’ wasn’t a word used of often when describing a normal day”.

6. What do you like most and least about your job? “I like putting bad guys in jail. The ones who really deserved to be there and posed a huge risk to the safety of our society. I loved getting those guys behind bars. The least? I never really liked dealing with dead people. Never got used to it”. If you could change one thing about the job what would it be? “The cops get killed. Not good”.

7. What do you see as the causes of child abuse and neglect, domestic violence and/or elder abuse? “Well I think there is more than one cause to these problems. I know with kids and abuse, drugs have a huge impact with crappy parenting. I would say a vast majority of kids I see at CPS have parents who abuse drugs regularly. DV is a whole different ball of wax. I don’t think you can pin DV down to one reason. But to name a few…drugs and alcohol, anger problems, mental health and lack of education could be some strong indicators”. What do you think are essential elements of intervention? “Non-judgmental support for sure, but also not holding people’s hands. Make them accountable in every supportive manner”.

8. What do you think are essential elements of prevention? “Education regarding drugs, anger, how to be a parent, conflict resolution…etc etc. Of course I don’t know if there is a cure, but at least those tools would help… What do you think future social workers need to know about child abuse and neglect? That it happens a lot more than we think. Sometimes right under our noses.

9. On a more personal level, is there a specific event that you remember being called in for to deal with a domestic violence case? Why did that case in particular impact you and how did you deal with it? “I do remember one where we were called in for a domestic disturbance and I remember the guy fled by the time we arrived. I remember knocking on the door and looking in the window and seeing a woman in the house with her kids huddled around her. She wouldn’t answer the door. Wouldn’t look out the window, just stood there almost frozen. She never did talk with us and I wondered what kind of fear she must have been in to not even speak with the police. I was really sad for her”. “I don’t remember any DV calls that really bothered me. I guess that’s a good thing. One learns not to make other people’s problems their own. You can’t, and you learn not to, especially after being on the job for five years”.
