Innovation & Successful Partnerships Summit September 2, 2010 Robert West Director - OEI 207-593-7725 www.oceanenergy.org
2
Ocean Energy Institute Founded by Matthew Simmons Founder of Simmons & Co Int’l. Peak Oil – “Twilight in the Desert” To utilize clean ocean energy to replace our dependency on declining fossil fuels World oil demand - 40 MB/day new oil required by 2030 (40% of world total) Economics and security Water scarcity is also a global issue 2
3
The Ocean Energy Institute is: A think-tank creating collaborative R&D teams for ocean energy projects A developer of ocean energy technology leading to the point of commercial feasibility A backer of ocean energy ventures A gathering place for ocean energy experts An ocean energy advocate educating stakeholders 3
4
OEI’s Charter The development of ocean energy in all forms: Energy Generation Wind (shallow and deep water) Tidal / Current / Wave OTEC / Bio-fuels / Hydrates / Seeps Derivatives of ocean energy Ammonia / Hydrogen Desalination / Sea Water A/C Use, Storage, Transmission 4
5
Accomplishments 2007 - 2010 Created the initial public awareness of Maine’s wind energy potential- public meetings / lectures /press Influence OEI determined that 5 GW of wind energy would make Maine independent (2008) Governor’s task force created - sets 5 GW target by 2030 (2009) Legislation passed setting 5 GW as goal (2010) Energy Ocean 2010 Award for Education Affiliations – U /Maine; Nat’l Corr. Center (Rice) 5
6
Possible application areas Complex systems in harsh, inaccessible environments Self test / monitoring, FMEA, design redundancy, modular replacements, reliability Program management of complex projects Teaming concepts Infrastructure diagnostics Oil / gas, water, smart grid, transportation, tankage Shock / vibration / environmental testing Aerodynamics & wind turbine design Power controllers / battery technology 6
