Reported Speech In English to report what someone said, you can use the preterit, the past progressive, or the conditional tense. In Spanish, a variety of tenses can be used for reported speech as well. In Spanish, we use the preterit, the imperfect, and the conditional tense. Preterit: Niko said he went to the movies - Niko dijo que fue al teatro Imperfect in Spanish but Past Progressive in English : Niko said he was going to the movies – Niko dijo que iba al teatro Conditional: Niko said he would go to the movies. – Niko dijo que iría al teatro
