What is Diwali? It used to be a Religious Festival but is now a National Festival enjoyed by most Indian people no matter where they live in the world.

The people of India and Nepal (or of Hindu, Jain and Sikh Religion) celebrate Diwali.

When is Diwali? It is celebrated for 5 consecutive days in either October or November. The festival date is calculated by the lunar Hindu calendar, it falls on different days each year.

The festival is celebrated with Fire Crackers, Candles and lights everywhere. It is a joyful celebration! Gifts are exchanged - often sweets or candles. Homes are decorated and oil lamps are lit. Fireworks are another big part of the celebrations.

Where does Diwali Happen? It is celebrated in India and Nepal and by Indian and Nepalese people all across the world.

Diwali – Why is it Celebrated? Today Diwali is celebrated across the world as the ‘’Festival of Lights’’ where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over evil within every person.

Special food for Diwali There is special food for Diwali – Sweets and lots of them! Before the festival starts, it is usual for women to get together in each other's kitchens in turn to make Diwali snacks.

What to wear for Diwali To celebrate Diwali people wear bright happy colours, and traditional Indian clothing - Salwar Suits for Men and Sari’s for women.
