Nationalism: The belief that one’s greatest loyalty should NOT be to a king or an empire but to a NATION of people who share a common culture and history. Nation-state: When a nation has it’s own independent government. Nationalism and Nation-State

Nationality Belief in a common ethnic background (real or myth)
Example: Italians draw upon the HISTORY of the Romans to unite their people. Nationality

A certain territory that belongs to the ethnic group: motherland, fatherland, and homeland.
Example: Germany, Italy, Russia Territory

Not united by a ruler; rather a government ruled by the people
Not united by a ruler; rather a government ruled by the people. The ruler must reflect the HERITAGE of the people. Example: Greeks ruled by Greeks rather than the Ottoman Empire Government

Example: Those who speak German should unite together to form a nation. Language

Common stories (folktales), songs, national costumes, heroes, religion (shared by all or most of the people) Example: Grimm's Fairy Tales (Germany), national anthems, folk music Cultural
