Learning Objective: Science, Engineering and Technology Core Standard: Design and construct a device that converts energy from one form to another to perform work. Date:Tuesday 1/6/15 Title: Waterwheel Introduction Learning Goals: I will be able to describe the basic use and function of a water wheel Key Words: Water Wheel, kinetic energy, potential energy, Velocity, Mechanical energy, Gravitational energy, Work, Power Warm Up: Imagine designing a water wheel such as the one in the picture. What could you use this wheel for? Give an example of how this water wheel may be used. Rod placed in center. On today’s lab report, copy the Date, learning goal and key words On Desk: Pen/pencil Agenda Book Binder I will check your student progress chart for completion including actions to take (10pts)

We will: Review warm up question Powerpoint about water wheels, energy, and STEM project. Take notes on lab report BEFORE LEAVING CLASS: Reflection- on lab report: Be sure to evaluate and rate your goal level First AND Describe what you did and/or learned today… Include any questions or concerns - write this on today’s printed lab report Ratings: 4- I understand enough to help others 3- I understand enough to work on my own 2- I still need some help 1- HELP, I am lost Homework: complete lab report and bring project materials – empty egg cartons (Styrofoam), pop bottles, etc.

STEM PROJECT Water Wheel

The Challenge: Create a Water Wheel that will lift a mass in a short period of time using the kinetic energy of running water.

Your Client Mr. P. Whaslia CEO of Deep River Pirate Philanthropy His Challenge to Pierce Middle School Students: Create a lift for the tubes of a new 80 foot tall water slide at Deep River water park. It has a Water Wheel next to it which can provide a way to lift tubes to the top of the slide, and produce a waterfall that is scenic and fun

What is a Water Wheel A water wheel is a machine that converts the energy of flowing water into usable power. The axle of the wheel can be used to turn a device or it can be connected by gears to machinery or to generators to convert the energy into electricity http://www.forteachersforstudents.com.au/site/themed- curriculum/water-wheels/facts/ http://www.forteachersforstudents.com.au/site/themed- curriculum/water-wheels/facts/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_wheel http://www.whitemill.org/z0028.htm Google images: types of waterwheels Google images

Types of Water Wheels

Types of Energy http://www.fplsafetyworld.com/?ver=kkblue&utilid=fplforkid s&id=16168 http://www.fplsafetyworld.com/?ver=kkblue&utilid=fplforkid s&id=16168

Information to know for your design

Definitions Velocity: Unit of distance divided by time. Velocity is in a specific direction Energy: the ability to do work Work: force acting over a distance Work= Force x Distance (unit= Joule) Power: work done over a period of time Power = Work/Time (unit= Watts)

Materials Pool Noodle for post Toothpicks Hot glue Recyclable plastic String 18g weight

The Engineering Design Process

Group Design Number of paddles Size of paddles Shape of paddles Angle of paddle To measure: Time to lift mass to a certain distance Distance of lift Mass of string and weight To Calculate Circumference of pool noodle Velocity
