The New LOOK A Change of Perceptions of Gender and Citizenship Rights in Egypt Sahar Hegazi
2
The Norm “Of course…I come first in everything, I am the man” So Women are Second…..because “they need to be protected / Cared for…and hence they come second…”
3
The Script As a man “I am entitled to more rights” “I can do what I want and only accept to do certain things “ “And not to do other things…”
4
The Expectations “That is what it means to be a man… “Be powerful, in control as the head of the house” I am caring for my significant others, I am the provider of my family so I deserved to be treated as royal” “Women best place is home…” “I have seen my father like this and my mother lived OK”
5
But..this is also what it means to be a woman Obedient: “I should follow what my husband says” In Charge: “Manage all the 10 balls in my hand at once” Caring for my man: “Put him as 1 priority….OR?” It is his responsibility: “Just stay home…”
6
Is this true? After all laws, modernization, agreements, conventions signed, CEDAW, …. Yes We say what we don’t always do behind the closed doors
7
Can we meet in the Middle? Of course we can… But we have to Want First
8
Some may want….for different reasons Good news
