3. To be There are two ways to say to be in Spanish: ser and estar. However they are used for different situations. We learned ser in a previous lesson and used ser when expressing basic characteristics, origin, and time. The verb estar is used to express: feelings/emotions location

4. Emotions/Feelings Use the verb estar when expressing emotions/feelings: cansado/a (tired) contento/a (happy) depremido/a (depressed) emocionado/a(excited) enojado/a(angry) nervioso/a (nervous) ocupado/a (busy) tranquilo/a(calm) triste(sad)

5. Location Use the verb estar when expressing location: El libro está en la mochila.The book is in the book bag. Some prepositions/location words used with estar are: al lado de(next to)debajo de(under)dentro de(inside of)encima de(on top of) cerca de(near)delante de(in front of) detrás de(behind)lejos de(far from) Use de after the preposition/location word when a specific location is mentioned. La biblioteca está al lado de la cafeteria.The library is next to the cafeteria. La oficina está cerca.The office is near. When de is followed by el, they contract to become del. El papel está debajo del lápiz.
