1 A Discrepancy in Online vs. Traditional Teaching!!!.... say it isn’t so. Heather Seitz Johnson County Community College Overland Park, KS

2 Context 35,000 students (largest in the state of Kansas) 200 level Introduction to Microbiology course. Pre-nursing, pre-dental hygiene, and pre- pharmacy students Class sizes are 25-30 students per section. I teach at least 3 sections a each semester.

3 How does class time affect student retention and learning outcomes? Hybrid = 1 hour of class time and “2 hours” online. Face to Face = 3 hours of class time a week. Same supplementary material online for both sections. Same exams, quizzes, and grading scheme.

4 Research Design Exam scores and overall course grade. Interview students who drop the course. Demographic survey asking: ▫Time spent working ▫Family commitments ▫Time spent studying for this class ▫How many credit hours taken both traditionally and online or hybrid. ▫GPA

5 Letter Grade Distribution in Face to Face vs. Hybrid Students
