3 Ser is used for qualities that DO NOT CHANGE, to indicate: 1. a description of permanent characteristics of objects and people 2. origin, nationality, or profession 3. when and where something takes place 4. to indicate possession

4 Estar is used for qualities that TEND TO CHANGE to indicate: 1. the description of temporary characteristics, emotional states, or conditions 2. location 3. progressive tense

5 Some adjectives have different meanings depending on whether they are used with ser or estar. La bailarina es bonita. The dancer is pretty. (Shes a pretty person.) La bailarina está muy bonita hoy. The dancer looks pretty today. (She doesnt always look this pretty.) El cómico es aburrido. (He is boring.) El cómico está aburrido. (He is bored.) El cantante es rico. (He is wealthy.) El postre está rico. (It tastes very good.)
