2. Paired Work  The Statistical Accounts of Eaglesham were written in 1799 and 1845.  Think about what a child might have looked like at this time.  With your partner, you have 5 minutes to draw a picture of a child on your piece of paper.

Paired Task  Read and discuss the extracts from the Statistical Accounts in your pairs.  As you read and discuss each extract, highlight any information which tells you that the rights in the UNCRC were not being received by the children in Eaglesham.  Write the article number of the rights which are not being received by the children in the margin of your extract sheet.

8. UNCRC The UN Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed 10 December 1948. The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights. In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not. The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognised that children have human rights too.
