INTRODUCTION H1N1 Swine Flu Is Influenza like Illness caused by Virus [H1N1] Was reported from Mexico in 2009 & it had spread to United States and other continents. Most people recover without need for hospitalization

WHAT HAPPENS ? Patient has acute respiratory illness with fever ≥ 38* C Illness Starts Within 7 days of contact with diagnosed Swine Flu person Diagnosis is confirmed by Government approved laboratories by special test

COMMUNICABILITY 1 day to 7 days after the onset of symptoms.
Illness persist for > 7 days, communicability persist till resolution of illness. Children may spread the virus for a longer period.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Symptoms are similar to seasonal flu. Fever Cough
Sore throat Runny or stuffy nose Body aches Influenza primarily infects the respiratory tract (nose, throat, and lungs). The disease can cause severe illness and lead to life-threatening complications, such as pneumonia, in many people.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Headache Chills Fatigue
Vomiting & diarrhea reported in 25% cases

HOW DOES SWINE FLU SPREAD?
Primarily through respiratory droplets Coughing Sneezing Touching droplets or touching object which has virus & then touching mouth, nose, eyes without washing hands

EMERGENCY WARNING SIGNS IN CHILDREN
Fast breathing or trouble breathing Bluish or gray skin Not drinking enough fluids Severe or persistent vomiting Not waking up / interacting Irritable Symptoms improve then return with fever & worse cough If a child gets sick and experiences any of these warning signs, seek emergency medical care.

SWINE FLU - CATEGORY- A Mild fever / cough / sore throat / with or without body ache, headache, diarrhoea and vomiting 2.Treat, Monitor progress 3.Reassess at 24 to 48 hours. 4.Confine at home and avoid mixing up with people What To Do : Do not require Oseltamivir ( tamiflu ) or testing for H1N1.

SWINE FLU- CATEGORY-B Mild fever / cough / sore throat / with or without body ache, headache, diarrhoea and vomiting Children / Pregnant women / Persons > 65 years Patients with lung / heart / liver / kidney diseases, diabetes, cancer and HIV What To Do : To confine at home and avoid mixing with people Shall be treated with Oseltamivir ( tamiflu ) No tests for H1N1 is required

SWINE FLU - CATEGORY-C Category-A and B, with 1.Breathlessness, chest pain, drowsiness, fall in BP, sputum mixed with blood, bluish discolouration of nails 2.Children with Sleepiness, high & persistent fever, not feeding, convulsions, shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing etc. 3.Worsening of underlying chronic conditions. What To Do : Require testing, immediate hospitalization & treatment.

PREVENTIVE MEDICATION
Only on Medical Advise To All close contacts of confirmed cases. Oseltamivir ( tamiflu ) is the drug of choice.

Use an alcohol based hand gel. Cough etiquette Cover mouth and nose with a handkerchief/tissue when you cough or sneeze. Wear mask Facemasks

Spit in public Take medicines without consulting a physician

Avoid crowded places Stay more than an arm's length from persons afflicted with flu Gargle With Warm Water with Salt Twice a Day
