PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre Monday at General Synod Presidential Address by the Archbishop of Canterbury was entitled: The Anglican Communion's challenges and the way forward

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre “Where does this extraordinary, fractious, diverse, argumentative, wonderful, united, ferocious, peaceful, persecuted, suffering body that is the Communion go, and what is the impact on us here ….?”

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre “We should rejoice in being part of this monumental challenge, of this great quest for the prize of being a people who can hold unity in diversity and love in difference. It is almost unimaginably difficult, and most certainly cannot be done except with a whole-hearted openness to the Holy Spirit at work amongst us.”

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre “So, the good news. The Communion exists and is doing wonderful things. The bad news. There are great divisions and threats. The challenge. There is a prize of being able to develop unity in diversity and also with deeper and deeper ecumenical relations demonstrating the power of Christ to break down barriers and to provide hope for a broken world. We must grasp that challenge, it is the prize of a world seeing Christ loved and obeyed in His church, a world hearing the news of his salvation. So let us here, ….., be amongst those who take a lead in our sacrificial, truthful and committed love for the sake of Christ for His mission in His world.”

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre “The [2014 PWM] Conference will aim to renew and expand our vision for global discipleship as well as bringing fresh insights from around the world. We will look at how we follow Christ personally and how this affects our representative roles for Companion Links, agencies and others.” global disciples: how we follow Christ fresh insights from around the world how this affects our roles

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre A Pauline answer to that question “ I have become its [the church’s] servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.” Colossians 1: 25-29

STAGE 2 Growing in Christ STAGE 3 Close to Christ STAGE 1 Exploring Christianity UNSTAGED Stalled relationship with Christ STAGE 4 Christ- Centred Each stage has different needs. Most church activities help those in stages 1 and 2

STAGE 2 Growing in Christ STAGE 3 Close to Christ STAGE 1 Exploring Christ UNSTAGED Stalled relationship with Christ STAGE 4 Christ- Centred What helps people in Stages 3 and 4 to grow and is the key to what some of those in a ‘Stalled Relationship’ are looking for: the willingness to take responsibility and become a “self- feeders”

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre “ We made a mistake. What we should do when people crossed the line of faith and become Christians, is to start telling people and teaching people that they have to take responsibility to become ‘self-feeders’. We should have taught people, how to read their bible between services, how to do the spiritual practices much more aggressively on their own.” Bill Hybels Founding and Senior Pastor, Willow Creek Community Church

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre “The Bible is the most powerful catalyst for spiritual growth - unrivalled by anything else we discovered” “Reflection on Scripture – implies a contemplative process, one of thoughtful and careful deliberation” “There is a difference between ‘knowing’ and ‘doing’”

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre “As we read the Scriptures as part of the global Church, as different emphases, reading styles and interpretations are shared, we are all reshaped as readers, and our eyes are opened to what we couldn’t see from where we stand.” ‘Of the Same Flesh: exploring theology of gender’. Christian Aid However, as Anglicans/Episcopalians, we engage with Scripture not just within a parish, diocese or even province but as part of a global family.

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre Why should Anglicans read Scripture together across the Communion? We offer three reasons: 1.Because reading Scripture together accords with the logic and the character of Scripture itself. 2. Because reading Scripture together accords with the character of the contemporary Anglican Communion. 3. Because as a church we are called to peace.

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre Engage with Scripture when we meet together across the Communion Engage together with Scripture through a common Lent Course Engage together with Scripture via Skype Learn from one another and explore fresh paths to engage more deeply with Scripture So, how might we rise to the challenge the Archbishop gives the Church?

PWM World Mission Conference 2014 Swanwick Conference Centre “So, the good news. The Communion exists and is doing wonderful things. The bad news. There are great divisions and threats.
