Hunger Around the World
2
842 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. This number has fallen by 17 percent since 1990. (The World Food Programme)
3
Women make up 43% of the agriculture workforce in developing countries, but their yields are 20-30% lower than men’s. This is because women have less access to land, improved seeds, fertilizers, and equipment than men. (The World Food Programme)
4
Giving women farmers more resources could reduce the number of hungry people in the world by 100-150 million people.
5
Over half of people suffering from hunger in the world live in Asia (553 million people). About one quarter live in Africa (227 million people).
6
There is enough food produced in the world to feed everyone.
7
People mainly suffer hunger because of lack of access to food. War, poor roads, unfair trade policies and high food prices limit their access to the food that is produced.
8
A typical ration for one adult for one day—as outlined by the World Health Organization—includes: 450 grams of cereal 50 grams of pulses 50 grams of oil 5 grams of iodized salt.
