We use Present continuous for :
. Things in progress now, at the moment of speaking.

. Actions that are happening around now.

. Situations we see as temporary.
my brother’s staying with my aunt until he finds a flat.
. Describing a situation which is gradually changing.
People are working longer hours nowadays.

Present simple ‘versus’ present continuous
Sometimes either form is possible.
Paola is the student who sits at the back of the class (= she always does this )
Paola is the student who is sitting at the back of the class. (= she is there now )
He’s working in a café (= a temporary job)
He works for a big electrical company (= a permanent job)
My parents are staying at the Metropole Hotel.
(= in the present period)
My parents stays at the Metropole Hotel.
(= every time they visit the town)

‘states’ versus ‘actions’ verbs
Some of verbs are rarely found in continuous forms. These verbs which describe ‘states’ (things which stay the same.) rather than ‘action’ (things which can change.) some of the most common are verbs:
. Connected with emotions :
hate , like , love , want.
. Connected with understanding :
believe , know , prefer , understand.
. Connected with the senses :
hear , smell , sound , taste.
. Connected with possession and unchanging qualities :
belong , cost , weigh.
