Relationships in Space Directions

Spatial Aspects  This is where the action occurs  There is your own personal space – the bubble around you & where you can reach to  There is the general space – the areas outside of your bubble & you have to move into, through, around & across

Spatial Levels  There are 3 spatial levels  High (Jump, stand, tip toe or reach up)  Medium (Lunge, stand on flat feet, kneel)  Low/Deep (Kneel, sit, lie, roll or slide)

Spatial Levels  There are 3 spatial levels  High (Jump, stand, tip toe or reach up)  Medium (Lunge, stand on flat feet, kneel)  Low/Deep (Kneel, sit, lie, roll or slide) Low

Spatial Levels  There are 3 spatial levels  High (Jump, stand, tip toe or reach up)  Medium (Lunge, stand on flat feet, kneel)  Low/Deep (Kneel, sit, lie, roll or slide) Low Medium

Spatial Levels  There are 3 spatial levels  High (Jump, stand, tip toe or reach up)  Medium (Lunge, stand on flat feet, kneel)  Low/Deep (Kneel, sit, lie, roll or slide) Low Medium High

Directions – Describing Lines  Three dimensional forms are defined by  Height  Width  Breadth A diagonal is defined in relation to a three- dimensional solid: A Cube  Which has 6 sides & 8 corners

Directions  There are 6 single directions  High (H)  Deep (D)  To the Right (R)  To the Left (L)  Forwards (F)  Backwards (B)

Directions  There are 6 single directions  High (H)  Deep (D)  To the Right (R)  To the Left (L)  Forwards (F)  Backwards (B) High Deep Left Right Forwards Backwards

Planes  There are three PLANES we can move in  With 12 two-dimensional directions

Planes  There are three PLANES we can move in  With 12 two-dimensional directions HR DR HL DL Spatial DOOR plane Movements from side to side Reaching high & low

Planes  There are three PLANES we can move in  With 12 two-dimensional directions Spatial TABLE plane Movements reaching forwards & backwards At waist height, to left & right FL BL FR BL

Planes  There are three PLANES we can move in  With 12 two-dimensional directions Spatial WHEEL plane Movements reaching forwards & backwards With change of level – no sideways action BH FH FD BD

Planes  There are three PLANES we can move in  With 12 two-dimensional directions HR DR HL DL Spatial DOOR plane Movements from side to side Reaching high & low Spatial TABLE plane Movements reaching forwards & backwards At waist height, to left & right FL BL FR BL Spatial WHEEL plane Movements reaching forwards & backwards With change of level – no sideways action BH FH FD BD

The Three Planes  Connect front to back through the centre  The diagonals shown are on three planes Door Plane Table Plane Wheel Plane

Diagonals  There are also 3-D directions (as opposed to 2-D planes)  With 8 diagonal directions  To reach HRF the gesture goes  High  Forwards  To the Right

Diagonals  There are also 3-D directions (as opposed to 2-D planes)  With 8 diagonal directions  To reach HRF the gesture goes  High  Forwards  To the Right

Diagonals  There are also 3-D directions (as opposed to 2-D planes)  With 8 diagonal directions  To reach HRF the gesture goes  High  Forwards  To the Right

Pathways  Travel on different pathways  Zig-Zag  Curved  Diagonal  Wavey  Labelled from the point of view of the dancer on the stage  Can be drawn by marking an “O” for the origin & “X” for the finish

Stage Chart – Stage Areas Upstage Downstage Downstage Left DSL Stage Left SL Upstage Left UL Centre C Downstage Right DR Stage Right SR Upstage Right USR

Size of Movements  Tiny (wagging finger)  Medium-sized (Stretching arm forwards & making large gesture with finger)  Large-sized (Taking a step up & forwards, reaching forwards with both arms and wagging both fingers in unison  Very large (Stepping into a high hop, taking both arms forwards & high, wagging fingers & landing in a balance or lunge)

Shape of Movements  The body can be rounded  Stretched thin  Twisted  Stretched wide

Gestures  Can be made with the arms & legs & can be  Linear  Curved  Angular  Above, below, infront, behind, or to the side of the body  Curled & rounded

Space Vocabulary  Page 62 of GCSE Dance by Pam Howard  A-Z listing of spatial words
