Developing a First Year Experience Summer Bridge Program Who? What? When? Where? Why? And How?

Who? 65 High school seniors ~ our mission is to recruit local high school, low-income, educationally under- prepared seniors that have not considered going to college. The goal ~ to spike their interest and get the students to continue their education. The result ~ 92% persistence rate from Summer to Fall.

What? A “No-Excuses” 6-week summer bridge program Enrollment in a College Success Course Enrollment in one other college course Tutoring and Peer Mentoring Support Fee Waivers Book Grants Weekly Stipends Weekly Field Trips

When? Santa Barbara City College’s Running Start program as well as the other Summer Bridge programs occur during the college’s summer session. Six week commitment Monday ~ Thursday morning courses Monday ~ Thursday afternoon Tutoring & Peer Mentoring Mandatory Field Trips/Program events on Fridays

Where? There are endless opportunities for field trips. China Town & Olvera St. Reagan Library & a Dodger Game UCSB Ropes Course July 4 th Beach Barbecue Museum of Tolerance Getty Museum Hearst Castle Local Factory Tours Theatre Production

Why? Promotion of a college education ~ In 10 years, 493 students not planning to attend college have pursued a college education. Opportunity to provide added academic support for students to ensure success Increases College enrollment Students Succeed…

Why? 2008 Running Start Stats: 62 students started the 2008 six- week program Average units attempted 5.70 Average units completed 5.15 Average GPA 2.95 61 completed the program All 61 enrolled in and completed fall 2008 semester 60 of 61 students enrolled in spring 2009 semester Where are they now? 2000 Alum ~ SDSU Graduate ~ Currently in Law School 2001 Alum ~ UCSB Grad 2006 ~ UCSB Financial Aid Analyst ~ Began Master’s program Spring 2009 2002 Alum ~ 2007 Transfer to UCLA 2003 Alum ~ UCSB Graduate ~ Master’s Program at Long Beach State 2003 Alum ~ 2008 Long Beach State Graduate ~ High School College Advisor 2003 Alum ~ UCLA Graduate, Med School USF 2003 Alumni (2 friends) ~ both 2008 CSU graduates ~ Working Locally in Social Services ~ Grad school Fall 2009

How? Start small ~ 24 students served our first year. Use pre-existing campus resources – Summer curriculum – Student Support Programs Seek financial support – PSS/Basic Skills Funding – Foundation – Trio – EOPS Be creative with field trip planning Make it fun ~ for both you and the students!
