1 100 years of adventure Cub Scout Centenary 2016

2 Wolf Cubs December 1916 - Wolf Cubs was launched at Claxton Hall
By the end of the following year there were already 30,000 In the UK we now have over 150,000 Cub Scouts 2016 will see us celebrate 100 years of adventure In December, 1916 ‘The Wolf Cub’ a new paper for boys was issued for the price of one old penny – less than a halfpenny in today’s money. It marked the start of a new younger section in the scout association – Wolf Cubs had arrived The new scheme was launched on December 16th at Caxton Hall, London. By the end of the following year, there were already 30,000 Wolf Cubs ! Today there are 150,000 Cub Scouts across the UK will therefore see us celebrating the centenary year of Cub Scouting.

3 Centenary objectives To involve Cubs Scout Packs across the whole of the UK. To increase growth and participation of young people and adults. To celebrate and have fun. To establish a momentum throughout the country for the next decade of Cub Scouting. To bring the history of scouting to light To raise awareness of the importance of Cub Scouts accessing adventurous activities and provide opportunities for young people within this section to experience adventure at an appropriate level for their age and ability. Our centenary year gives the opportunity to Involve everyone, both those who are currently members and those who have been in the past. Give more young people the chance to enjoy the magic which is Cub Scouting To celebrate and launch the future of Cub Scouting whilst recognising where we have come to since that launch in 1916 We also aim to raise the profile of adventurous activities as part of a modern, challenging Cub Scout Programme.

4 2015 A Year of Adventure Our objective to promote adventurous activity within the Cub Section is to be further supported through 2015 – our ‘year of Adventure’

5 2015 Year of Adventure In preparation for the centenary year
Renewed focus on including adventurous activities to Cub Scouting A focus on a new adventurous activity each month Badge available to those Cub Scouts who take part in the 2015 Year Of Adventure Throughout 2015 we will promote some specific adventurous activities to encourage Cub Scout Packs to take part.. Packs will be asked to develop the basic activity to find a way of doing it to the level of ability and skills of their members. Physical challenge will be encouraged to meet the appetite of our young people. A separate badge will be available for those who take part in this aspect of the centenary year preparation.

6 2016 Year of Celebration Locally organised adventure camp
‘Our Journey’ – a programme resource for the centenary year Thanks events – a chance to thank those locally who have brought Cub Scouting through its first 100 years Promise parties – a chance to celebrate, reflect and renew our Promise This national celebration package has been designed to be as flexible as possible to meet the needs of local demands and time scales. The only fixed date in the programme is Friday December 16th 2016 when we hope that everyone involved with Cub Scouts will share in a Promise event. Let’s take a look at each aspect in turn

7 A local celebration Each Cub Scout to have the opportunity to attend an adventure camp during the year The camps to have an adventure theme Events to be organised at County, District or Pack/Group depending on local circumstances To meet the adventure objective, we will promote the idea that every Cub Scout should have the opportunity to attend an adventure camp during the year. This may be developed at any level from local pack holidays to large district or county/area events. The important thing is to put adventure at the core of the programme. Scout Camp sites and adventure centres could get on board with these events, offering Centenary packages for leaders to buy into.

8 Our journey An exciting series of challenges for Cub Packs to use
throughout the year All available for download in 2015 to help with planning We want the centenary year to be an exciting one for every Cub Scout in their weekly meetings. After all, that is where Cub Scouting happens, Throughout the year, a programme resource called ‘Our Journey’ will be available, down loadable from the scout webpage The programme will give ideas showing how Cub Scouts can make a journey through a series of exciting activities in their pack meetings making the centenary year a year to remember. The resource will give starting points enabling local Cub Scout Packs the opportunity to mould the activities to their circumstances, skills and abilities.

9 Thanks events An event planned to enable today’s Cub Scouts to say thanks to leaders past and present Saying ‘thanks’ to adult leaders both past and present, is an important part of the centenary year. We envisage ‘thanks’ events being organised which involve Cub Scouts themselves being the hosts. On Line support will be available to give ideas.

10 Promise parties Only event with a set date – 19:16 on Friday 16th December End of year celebration event for Cub Scouts and leaders Opportunity to renew our Promise at 19:16 The Promise Party is the one fixed event. We want everyone to stop and reaffirm their promise at on Friday December 16th 2016. The Promise Parties are designed to be the final part of the programme – a chance to have the traditional party with games, food and the all important Birthday cake. It will be an opportunity to raise the profile of Cub Scouting across the UK

11 Centenary Badge Competition
Launched October 2013 Ended January 31st 2014 Amber Pheasant was the winner of the badge competition for more information please see and in the June/July Mag A special uniform badge will be produced to be worn throughout the year. Members of any section will be able to wear the badge. We want Cub Scouts themselves to be able to design the badge so we are currently running a national competition. Details and a downloadable application form are available from up to the end of January. The competition will be judged in April with the final selection being done by our Chief Scout Bear Grylls. The badge will be available to wear from 2015 onwards.

12 We hope that Cub Scouts and Cub Scout Leaders will remember 1916 as a fantastic year to be involved in the section. The amount of involvement is up to you – the support will be there to help you to make the year special. Good luck in your planning Don’t forget, we love to hear what you have been up to, look out for these on the centenary web page
