Wednesday, October 29 th, 2014 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to: List the characteristics used to describe a population You will have the first 20 minutes of class to read pages 130-133 and answer questions 1a,2a and 2b, in complete sentences in your notebook

 Researchers study populations by:  geographic range  density and distribution  growth rate, and age structure. DESCRIBING POPULATIONS

Geographic Range The area inhabited by a population A population’s range can vary enormously in size, depending on the species.

Density and Distribution Population density refers to the number of individuals per unit area. Populations of different species often have very different densities, even in the same environment.

A population of ducks in a pond may have a low density, while fish and other animals in the same pond community may have higher densities.

Distribution refers to how individuals in a population are spaced out across the range of the population randomly uniformly in clumps

Growth Rate A population’s growth rate determines whether the population size increases, decreases, or stays the same.

Population Growth A population will increase or decrease in size depending on how many individuals are added to it or removed from it. The factors that can affect population size are the birthrate, death rate, and the rate at which individuals enter or leave the population.

Age Structure the number of males and females of each age a population contains.

Thursday, October 30 th, 201 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… Describe the major differences between Exponential and Logistic Growth Describe factors that affect carrying capacity Entrance task: Review your notes from yesterday in terms of what we use to describe a population… How would you describe our classroom population?

With your partner in your notebook Describe the population in the first picture. Be as specific as possible Describe all features including numbers, habitat, and any other pertinent details When you finish the first, describe the second

Friday, October 31 st 2014 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… Describe factors that affect carrying capacity Describe density dependent and independent limiting factors on populations Entrance task: After you write out your objectives, please use pages 133 and 134 to figure out if your rabbit population from yesterday is showing exponential or logistic growth and explain how you know… You have 2 minutes until we will discuss

Exponential growth Under ideal conditions with unlimited resources, a population will grow exponentially. J curve

Logistic Growth occurs when a population’s growth slows and then stops, following a period of exponential growth.

Carrying Capacity Carrying capacity is the maximum number of individuals of a particular species that a particular environment can support. Once a population reaches the carrying capacity of its environment, a variety of factors act to stabilize it at that size.

Limiting Factors Control the growth of the population

Density Dependent Limiting Factors Factors that affect tightly packed populations Competition Predation Herbivory parasitism Disease Stress from overcrowding

Density Independent Limiting Factors Affect all populations in similar ways, regardless of population size NATURAL DISASTERS!!

How can the carrying capacity fluctuate?

Tuesday, November 4 th, 2014 do not take the tape off of your desk… VOCAB QUIZ TOMORROW!! Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… Describe how predator and prey relationships change populations Entrance task: Please grab a hare and lynx sheet from the first counter and read through the activity we will be doing today.

Wednesday, November 5 th, 2014 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… Determine factors that affect human population growth. Entrance task:YOU DO NOT NEED TO WRITE THIS TODAY Please have out your lynx and hare homework. Spend a few minutes answering the discussion questions with your group. Pay special attention to number 4 and discuss how the lynx and hare relationship relates to population growth and size…

Page 139… Describe the trends…

Thursday, November 6 th, 2014 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… Describe how invasive species affect native species. Entrance task: Open your book to page 136 and read the article. After reading, answer the following questions in your notebook: Why is the population growth of mussels within the great lakes different from the population growth in its native ecosystem?

Invasive Species Nonnative species that come into an area… What is the problem?

In your notebook… What did Malthus have to say? What does phosphorus fertilizer have to do with populations? What is one surprising thing that you learned about in this article?

DEMOGRAPHY THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF HUMAN POPULATIONS – BIRTHRATES – DEATHRATES – AGE STRUCTURE

Thursday, November 6 th, 2014 Daily Objective: same as yesterday… you do not need to rewrite it. Entrance task: Grab a human population paper off of the first desk. Glue it in your notebook and complete it quickly please.

Population growth Homework Final review

Chapter 5 Mini Quiz Page 151, 1-10 On a half sheet of paper… to turn in

Monday, November 10 th, 2014 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… Describe renewable and non renewable resources Entrance task: Grab a renewable and non renewable worksheet off of the first counter and begin working on it please… you should only be answering the first question

CHAPTER 6 Big Idea: Interdependence in Nature How have humans shaped local and global ecology? How do we affect the environment? How can we use our natural resources wisely? Why should we protect biodiversity? How can we change our behaviors to help protect our planet?

Renewable Resources They can be replaced by a healthy ecosystem

Nonrenewable resources Cannot be replenished naturally: like fossil fuels

BIOSPHERE  Idea for how to help remedy our human effects

Sustainable Development Using resources in a way that preserves ecosystems that produce natural resources

Clear cutting is the process of removing the majority of trees from a forest for human use. What might a sustainable alternative to clear cutting look like?

Wednesday, November 12 th, 2014 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… YOU DO NOT NEED TO REWRITE THIS TODAY Describe renewable and non renewable resources Entrance task: What is an example of a non-renewable resource? Explain why.

Expert groups Hydropower 1 Wind 2 Solar 3 Geothermal 4 Biomass 5

Thursday, November 13 th, 2014 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… Define Biodiversity and explain its importance Entrance task: In your own words, without looking at your book or talking to your neighbors, write what you think biodiversity means. (hint: BIO and Diversity)

Biodiversity The total of all the genetically based variation in all organisms in the biosphere

Ecosystem diversity Variety of habitats, communities and ecological processes

Species diversity The number of different species in the biosphere

Genetic diversity All the different forms of genetic information carried by a particular species – Important for survival in a changing environment

Why is it important?

Humans reduce diversity by … Changing habitats – Ex: Hunting – Ex: Introducing invasive species Releasing pollution into food webs Contributing to climate change

You do not need to write this out today… Please open your book to page 164 and read through the section about acid rain. – What do we do to increase acid rain

Please take out your lab and with your table partners discuss the following… What are you going to be measuring? (Your dependent variable…) How will you know it is germinated?

Tuesday, November 18 th, 2014 Daily Objective: By the end of today, I should be able to… Identify strengths and weaknesses within my understanding of chapter 5 and 6 content Entrance task: Please have out your notebooks and bookmark the page where your chapter 5 notes start and your chapter 6 notes end. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR TEXTBOOK TODAY!!!!

By the end of today, I should be able too
