What every adviser should know about student life How might I advise students differently if I knew more what they’re really dealing with?

Division of Student Life Create a transformative college experience that dissolves the traditional barriers between in and out of classroom settings… Academic Support Center Career Center Dacie Moses House Dean of Students Office Disability Services Gender and Sexuality Center Intercultural and International Life Residential Life Office Student Activities Office Student Health and Counseling TRiO / Student Support Services Cultivate a community environment that optimizes student learning through programs, activities and facilities that support student development… Getting to know students by name and by story…

Food for thought… Is advising at a residential college somehow different from advising at a different type of school?

Carleton is a country club with classes. Really, how hard or stressful can this be for students?

An aggregate identity of Carls coming in… Hyper-intelligent and high achievers in academic settings Can handle anything Can handle everything actually, and with very little sleep

Possible stressors The aggregate identity is under attack. Wherever they came from did not require them to organize, plan, or work ahead. First year students are likely sharing a living space with someone they did not know before coming to Carleton. Very few students have much experience living in close quarters with peers of different backgrounds and identity (e.g., Race, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Socio-Economic Class). Upper class students (what they want to be someday) seem able to handle so much more. For many, the social life presents new opportunities both in breadth and depth and sometimes this presents some challenges. Their own experiences stress them as well as the experiences of their friends A changing relationship with their parents

A script for parents… Thanks for calling! How does that make you feel? What would you like to do? Who at Carleton might help you with that?

Wanna talk about it? How might I advise students differently if I knew more what they’re really dealing with?
