Chapter 2 Section 3 Go through this power point with your partner, taking notes and discussing the material as you progress through the paper.
2
Change of State The change a substance undergoes when it changes from one physical form to another. Some modern examples are when matter changes:
3
A liquid to… a Gas
4
Evaporation The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas. One way that evaporation takes place is through boiling: The conversion of a liquid to a vapor when the vapor pressure of a liquid equals the atmospheric pressure. This change is endothermic because energy is gained by the molecules in the substance during the change of state.
5
A liquid. A Gas to…
6
Condensation The change of state from a gas to a liquid The condensation point of a substance is the temperature at which the gas becomes a liquid! This change is exothermic because energy is removed by the molecules in the substance during the change of state.
7
A Solid. A liquid to…..
8
Freezing The change of state from a liquid to a solid The temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid is called the liquid’s freezing point. This change is exothermic because energy is removed by the molecules in the substance during the change of state.
9
A Solid to….. A liquid
10
Melting The change of state in which a solid becomes a liquid This change is endothermic because energy is gained by the molecules in the substance during the change of state.
11
A Solid to….. A Gas
12
Sublimation The Change in state from a solid directly to a gas This change is endothermic because energy is gained by the molecules in the substance during the change of state.
