THE THIRD CONDITIONAL We form the third conditional by using the past perfect after if and by using would have and the past participle in the main clause. If + past perfect, ….. would + have + past participle If he had studied better, he would have passed the exam. It talks about the past and it’s used to describe a situation which didn’t happen /or couldn’t happen/ in the past and to imagine the result of this situation.
3
Look at these examples: If I hadn’t eaten the hamburger, I wouldn’t have felt sick. /but I ate it and so I felt sick that time/. If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn’t have missed the train. I would have been at school on time if I had left my house at half past seven. I wouldn’t have been tired if I had gone to bed at 10. If I had been taller, I would have been a basketball player.
4
Make the third conditional in the sentences: 1/ If he……/not take/ the job, he……. /travel/. 2/ If we….../not go/ there, we……../not meet/ her. 3/ If Eve…../go/ to university, she……/study/ history. 4/ If he……/born/ in a different country, he……/learn/ to speak a different language. 5/ If she……/go/ to music school, she……./become/ a singer. 6/ She……../be/ happier if she……/stay/ at home. 7/ She…../buy/ a new dress if she…../have/ money. 8/ We…../see/ Tom if we…../arrive/ earlier.
5
Complete the sentences with the third conditional in your own words: If I had been born in the 19 th century……….. If I had been an only child………. ………I would have been happier. ………the world would have been a better place. If the 2 nd World War hadn’t happened………. If Superman had been an attractive girl……... ………I wouldn’t have got an education. ………she would have been a supermodel. If I had lived in a big city………… …………..he would have been a doctor.
6
Write down 5 regrets you have. Take turns telling the other students about your regrets: If I had spent more time training, I could have become a good swimmer. If I had taken more money………. If I hadn’t been so shy………
7
Task: Something has gone wrong. Work in pairs and blame each other for what happened: e.g. You locked yourselves out of the house. If you had reminded me to take my keys, we wouldn’t have been stuck outside. If you hadn’t been in such a rush, I wouldn’t have run out in such a hurry. Possible situations: You can’t remember where you parked your car. You got lost. You missed the sales. You overslept. You failed an exam.
