2 nd conditional Look at these first-conditional sentences: “Come on, Rachel. If we hurry, we’ll catch the half-past-nine bus.” “There’s no rush, is there? If we miss it there’ll be another one in fifteen minutes.” Now compare with these sentences: If I had a million euros, I’d probably buy a yacht. If you had a yacht, you would be able to travel round the world.

The present tense (hurry) refers to a possible future action, something which may or may not happen. The past tense (had) refers to something unreal. If I had a million euros means that I haven’t really got a million euros, but I am imagining that I have. For example: First: If we take the car, we’ll have to pay for parking. Second: If we took the car, we’d have to pay for parking. Here both sentences refer to a possible future action. But in the 2 nd Conditional, the action is less probable. If we took the car means that we have decided not to take it,

Match sentences 1-8 with a-h. 1.If I had better qualifications, 2.If he wasn’t so mean, 3.If she didn’t work overtime, 4.If I knew more about money, 5.The boss would sack me 6.I wouldn’t lend a friend money 7.He wouldn’t work 8.It’d be safer a.if she found out about the document I lost. b.if he didn’t have to. c.I’d invest in the stock market. d.if you kept your money in a bank account. e.unless I knew he’s pay me back. f.people would like him more. g.I’d apply for that job. h.her salary wouldn’t be enough to live on.

Ask your partner questions using these words: for example What job would you do if you could choose one? can choose a job have more free time speak English fluently can have dinner with a famous person inherit a fortune fall in love with a foreigner need to borrow some money can go abroad this summer

Question forms: can choose a job - What job would you do if you could choose one? have more free time – What would you do if you had more free time? speak English fluently – What would you do if you could speak English fluently? can have dinner with a famous person – Who would you choose if you could have dinner with a famous person?

Question forms: inherit a fortune – How would you spend your money if you inherited a fortune? fall in love with a foreigner – Do you think you could fall in love with a foreigner? What would you do? need to borrow some money – What would you do if you needed to borrow money? can go abroad this summer – Where would you go if you could go abroad this summer?

Transform these sentences as in this example: That dress is so expensive that I can’t buy it. If that dress weren’t so expensive I could buy it. He’s got a bad cough. He smokes too much. I’ve got too much homework. I can’t come to the concert with you. They haven’t got central air conditioning. Their house is really hot in summer. He drives too fast. That’s why he’s had so many accidents. Sorry I can’t help you. I don’t know Russian.

He’s got a bad cough. He smokes too much. If he didn’t smoke so much he wouldn’t have that cough. I’ve got too much homework. I can’t come to the concert with you. If I didn’t have so much homework, I’d come with you to the concert.

They haven’t got central air conditioning. Their house is really hot in summer. If they had central air conditioning, their house wouldn’t be so hot / would be cooler in summer. He drives too fast. That’s why he’s had so many accidents. If he didn’t drive so fast, he wouldn’t have so many accidents. Sorry I can’t help you. I don’t know Russian. If I knew Russian I could / would help you.
