Students want structure… “That (block scheduling) would be fabulous – if you knew you could schedule your courses every semester at the same time, wouldn’t that be a dream come true?” -- Student Guided Pathways to Success Perspectives from Indiana College Students and Advisors
11
Students want structure… “I actually like that approach because I’ve had the days where I go to class for an hour, and then I have two hours off. Well, I really don’t want to drive home just to drive all the way back. …I could go into a job and say, “…I can come in at one thirty or two o’clock and work with you guys.” I think employers would appreciate that more because I’ve actually missed out on a couple of jobs because of my school schedule.” -- Student Guided Pathways to Success Perspectives from Indiana College Students and Advisors
12
Essentials of Structured Schedules Full-time, Monday-Friday, morning, afternoon, or evening or weekend blocks Full-time means “15 to Finish” or year-round for part- time students Predictable schedule constant throughout Whole programs choice, not individual courses Student cohorts for added support and faculty engagement Mandatory attendance
13
TN Colleges of Applied Technology Highly structured, block schedule program 81% of students graduate, at rate 3x higher than peers, even though slightly poorer and older Certificate programs have a job placement rates of 86%
14
CUNY ASAP Program Students grouped into cohorts with consolidated block schedules Doubled graduation rates for associate degrees 55% of fall 2007 cohort earned associate degrees in 3 years
