2. The Biological Pump is the process in which CO2 fixed in photosynthesis is transferred to the interior of the ocean. This process results in a temporary/permanent storage for carbon.

3. Atmospheric CO2 fixed by an organism capable of self nourishment in the upper ocean is moved to deep waters by many different processes. Phytoplankton grow old and sink down as aggregates or they are eaten by non meat eating organisms in which they produce sinking fecal pellets. -> Aggregates may then be decomposed or eaten by other species.

4. 24 hour vertical migration is a component in which zooplankton feeding in the surface waters, at night, actively transport dissolved material to depth by metabolizing the eaten food at their daytime residence depths. Vertical Migration of some phytoplankton species may bring nutrients from the nutricline in the euphotic zone.

5. Phytoplankton produce dissolved organic carbon that can be moved down into the deep during deep mixing occurrences.

6. Phytoplankton/Zooplankto n are tiny plants organisms that live in the sea. They are the base for food, they are eaten by whales/small fish. They are important to this biological process because they are the ones that help with the biological pump.

7.  The Biological Pump is important because it removes CO2 from the surface water of the ocean, which it then changes it into living matter and moves it to the deeper water layers.

8. If there Was no Biological Pump then all the carbon dioxide would stay in the top layer of the water and wouldn’t be sent to the bottom. This would deeply affect many organisms like phytoplankton or the zooplankton. This would be very Bad for the Ocean.

9. The Biological Pump is VERY important. It transfers Co2 levels steady from the surface of the ocean to the deep. If we didn’t have the Biological Pump many species of fish, plants, etc. would be affected.
