Let’s see what you know about TIME…  How many days are in one year?  There are 365 days in one year.  How many months are there in a year?  There are 12 months in a year.  How many days are there in one week?  There are 7 days in one week.

Great job so far- let’s try a few more questions!  Approximately how many weeks are there in one month?  There are approximately 4 weeks in each month.  How many hours are in one day?  There are 24 hours in one day.  How many minutes are there in one hour?  There are 60 minutes in one hour.

Just a few more to see if you are a master of time… How many minutes are there in a 1/2 hour? There are 30 minutes in a 1/2 hour. How many seconds are there in one minute? There are 60 seconds in one minute. GREAT JOB! Now that I know you know these facts, let’s try some different types of questions.

Use what you know to solve these time questions! How many minutes are in 2 hours? There are 120 minutes in 2 hours. Approximately how many weeks are there in 2 months? There are approximately 8 weeks in 2 months. What is another way I could say 90 minutes? An hour and a half is another way.

Great job so far! Let’s try a few more…  How many minutes are in ¼ of an hour? *Think, if I broke an hour up evenly into 4 pieces, what would one of those pieces be  15 minutes is ¼ or quarter of an hour.  What time would it be if it was quarter of 12?  It would be 11:45 because “of” means before the hour.

Great! We sure know a lot about time!  Now, let’s move onto elapsed time. What is elapsed time?  Elapsed time is the difference between two times.  This can be tricky. Let’s look at a good strategy for finding elapsed times.

How to find elapsed times… Use a number line! When you see that both times are in a.m. or both times are in p.m., a number line can really help you. Let’s look at this example: Find the elapsed time from 2:30 p.m.- 7:40 p.m.

Let’s try another one with a number line. Remember- each jump is one hour! Suzy started baking cookies at 4:45 p.m. She finished at 6:20 p.m. How long did it take her?

What if I have to move from a.m. to p.m. or p.m. to a.m.?  Let’s look at this problem: Joe went to bed at 8:30 p.m. He woke up at 7:15 a.m. How long did he sleep for? Let’s try another number line!

Let’s try one more like that…  Jimmy went to a movie at 10:45 a.m. It ended at 1:30 p.m. How long was the movie?

Finally, what if the times aren’t over an hour apart? Let’s look at this problem: Sal sat down for dinner at 5:45p.m. He finished at 6:30. How many minutes passed? Let’s make a more specific number line for this one.

Let’s try one more like that Betty went ice skating at 4:35p.m. She finished at 5:15. How many minutes passed?

Remember, sometimes you will be working backwards as well! Bobby finished shopping at the mall at 3:30. He arrived there 1 hour and 30 minutes earlier. What time did Bobby arrive at the mall? Let’s try a number line!

Let’s try one more… Lou left his job at the bank at 6:45. He arrived there 30 minutes earlier. What time did he arrive at the bank?

Now it’s your turn! With a partner, you will find some centers around the room about elapsed time. Use your number line and Smart Pal to answer the questions! It’s a race against time~ you may begin!
