Let’s think about it… The Teenage Brain

What does this mean? ‘A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.’

‘A leopard cannot change its spots.’

‘Birds of a feather flock together.’

‘Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.’

‘Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.’

‘If life hands you lemons, make lemonade.’

Children younger than 7 years of age tend to interpret statements very literally
Piaget says that they are in the Preconceptual Stage of Development Between ages years children become Concrete learners; they begin to understand that there may be other interpretations

After age 14, teens enter the formal Operations stage and undergo a transformation involving understanding, insights, perceptions; they are no longer literal thinkers

Scenario 1 ‘You are driving in an unfamiliar town/city and although the traffic is a bit heavy, you are being cautious, and all is well. Out of the blue, some guy cuts you off and you are forced to slam on your brakes narrowly averting a collision. You really want to get back at this jerk by similarly being rude and dangerous. What do you do?’

Scenario 2 ‘Your life is best described by you as ‘okay’. You have an okay job that pays the bills, but may not take you too far. You have an okay committed relationship that you have been involved in for the past year and you are contented with it. You have a few good friends. Life is okay. One day when you are taking the city bus heading for home as you have everyday for the last few years, you have a chance meeting with a very attractive individual to whom you are instantly attracted. He/she sits beside you on the bus and engages you in a conversation. You find that you have many things in common, plus he/she is attractive. He/she indicates that he/she is single and would like to ‘get to know you better’. What do you do?
