USE OF THE LANGUAGE Suggestions To talk about suggestions we can use different phrases and words. Modal Phrases Should Could Why don't you (we) … You / we could … Let's go … Shall we … What about … ? That’s a good / great / fantastic … idea. Good Idea. Yeah! Why not? I’d love to Yes, Let’s … Sorry! I don’t think is a good idea. I’m afraid but … I’d love to but … Well, I’d rather… I don’t feel like it … I don’t like your idea because … Why don’t you take some days off. You are very tired. I’d love to but I can’t. I have a lot of work in the office. NOTE: Las expresiones previas las utilizamos para poder expresar nuestras sugerencias de algún tema especifico, en el caso de los modales “should” y “could” van precedidos del verbo en su forma base. Ejemplo: You could study french. She should go to the denstist.

Examples: Let’s eat out! Why don’t we eat out? You should eat out. I think we should eat out. If I were you, I’d eat out. You ought to eat out. Shall we eat out? NOTE: I’d = I would

Should USE: We can use SHOULD to express suggestion or advice.
Examples: You should study more. You should wake up early. Rodrigo should spend more time with his family. FORM: We use SHOULD + verb ( base form). I think we should organize a party. I think you should stop smoking. I think you shouldn’t go to the party. ( shouldn’t = should not ) Note: The word ‘advice’ cannot be pluralized. So, it is incorrect to say advices. Instead we should say: A piece of advice / Pieces of advice / Some advice

Why don’t/ doesn’t (we) + verb in the base form
Why don't you (we) … FORM: Why don’t/ doesn’t (we) + verb in the base form Examples: Why don’t we go to the cinema ? Why don’t you call your mother? Why doesn’t she look for a new job? Why doesn’t he organize a party in his house?

What about …/ How about …
FORM: What about/ How about verb –ING- / noun Examples: What about the new Japanese restaurant? What about romantic music ? What about meatballs? How about English? How about coffee? What about going to dance ? What about eating a delicious hamburger ? How about buying a new radio? How about going to Acapulco the next weekend?

Could FORM: + Could + verb in the base form. Examples:
We could wear jeans. You could go with us if you want. She could learn Japanese. Affirmative: She could eat green salad. Negative: She couldn’t eat green salad. Interrogative: Could she eat green salad? Yes, she could / No, she couldn’t

Let’s … FORM: Let’s + verb in the base form Examples:
Let’s go to the cinema. Let’s eat hamburgers. Let’s dance. Let’s visit our grandmother. Let’s listen to pop music.

I suggest (you) … FORM: + suggest + + verb (base form). Examples:
I suggest you take all the factors into consideration before we decide. I suggest you go to the cinema and watch the new film. I suggest we go to the Brazilian Restaurant.
