3.  RECOR is a member of NBDF and jointly developed this project  In line with RECOR experience, the partnership in this project consist of establishment of 5 model village in 4 districts of Eastern Province : Bugesera, Nyagatare, Kirehe and Gatsibo

4.  The emphasis is on piloting best practices and models community based climate change adaptation actions on the ground; establishing model villages to serve as examples in climate change adaptation and environmental protection for poverty reduction.  Beneficiaries of the project are 500 households composed of 2456 family members, 1892 of them are women. Beneficiaries provides labour, RECOR support them with technical knowhow, material and seeds

5.  Rain water harvesting, 15 water tanks of 10m 3 to serve 75 households in all villages  500 Vegetable gardens in all villages  Support beneficiaries to plant 2,000 improved fruit trees resistant to climate variability  Power 20 households per village with solar energy for lighting, radio powering and phone charging

6.  Hillsides irrigation with pumped water from valley dam in Bugesera and surface water collection in Nyagihanga  15000 agroforestry trees grown in community nurseries and planted in the model villages  5 Compost making for supplying manure to vegetable gardens  Goats keeping for increased organic manure and improvement of livelihood for vulnerable people (80 goats)

7.  Improved cooking stoves for reducing pressure on the vegetation cover and time spent on firewood collection (1250 Cooking stoves constructed in 5 villages)

9.  Determine the use of the plots  Plan space for each use and crop rotation in each parts of the plots  Determine which part is suitable for a certain crop specie

10. Demonstration of kitchen gardens resistant to long droughts  established 100 vegetable gardens per village, ie 500 vegetable gardens per 5 villages in 4 districts (per each season) Kitchen watered by a pot Double dug kitchen for water retention

11. Hillsides irrigation in Rutobotobo village, Bugesera district Cabbage harvesting on a consolidated land Onions plantation on a consolidated land Near a valley dam

12. Improved fruit seedlings with high production in short time Each family received 2 grafted avocadoes seedlings (Hass specie), 1 mango (Tomi) and 1 Orange (Washington), a total of 100 families per village benefited i.e 500 families per 5 model villages.

13. Grafted fruit trees are in good condition

14.  Average growth rate is at 75%  Gatebe II Village in Nyagatare coming at 1 st place where the growth rate is more than 98%  Munini Village is last at 30% of growth rate  Other species of fruit trees are in nurseries to cover the loss incured

15. Rain water harvesting  Construction of 15 underground water tank to serve 75 families Tanks are near completion, they need final touches like installation of filters

16.  Completion of water tanks took longer than expected due to various unforeseen circumstances like shortage of construction materials in some areas, relocation of the tanks due to rocks found during excavation, etc

17. Villages greening  5 nurseries established for 5 villages  Each nursery is supposed to have 3000 trees of various tree species according to the choice of beneficiaries. Among the species we can note : Calliandra, Papaya, Croton Megalocarpus, Grevellea, Desmodium, Cassia ssp, etc  Tree planting commenced in Bugesera Villages

20.  Each village was supposed to have 3000 seedlings but many of them surpassed the number. For example in Nyamikamba Gatsibo district, we have 7,600 Trees in one nursery, In Rutobotobo village, the nursery has 5500 Trees.  Each nursery has ornamental trees, fruits, agroforestry trees and fodder shrubs  Transplantation is due from17th to 24 of November 2014

21.  Compost making Composts are at their last stage of preparation, they should be used within 15 days from now

22.  Support beneficiaries to create Voluntary serving and loan schemes to become cooperatives  Training on climate change impact identification and solving  Training on finding climate change adaptation options Empowerment of beneficiaries

23.  Training on sustainable farming and building a climate resilient agriculture  Training on establishment of a drought resistant kitchen garden  Provide vegetable specie resistant to long drought.

24.  Support beneficiaries to build energy saving cooking stoves (1250 stoves, ie 250 per village) for reducing the use of biomass and time spent on firewood collection  Goats keeping for improvement of livelihood and organic manure (80 families get goats)  Solar energy for demonstration of clean energy use at homestead (100 families connected to solar power)  Hillside irrigation in Rutobotobo village in Bugesera and Nyamikanda village in Gatsibo

25.  Some of the beneficiaries (elders, People living with disabilities, etc) are unable to contribute to the project activities and may reduce the rate of replication of the project activities  Some of the houses in the villages are occupied by tenants, that makes them feel not stable to participate in kitchen gardens establishment  Some of the village members are carrying their activities far from the village and come at home for sleeping only so they didn’t benefit project activities.  Turnover of field officers
