Les verbes réfléchis Reflexive Verbs
2
What are pronouns? Pronouns take many forms and perform different actions Subject pronouns : Personal pronouns that are subjects of the verb I danse.Je danse. You can find the subject pronoun by asking who does the action. In French, Subject Pronouns (SP) are je tu il elle on nous vous ils elles
3
Reflexive Pronouns These pronouns are preceded by the noun, adjective, adverb, or pronoun to which they refer (also called an antecedent) in the same clause. In English, these words are considered to be somewhat archaic, and they aren’t used often (especially not in reflexive verbs) myself, yourself, herself, himself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves In French, reflexive pronouns are called les pronoms réfléchis me te se nous vous se They match their antecedent, meaning that je takes me, tu takes te, etc.
4
Reflexive Verbs in English These verbs describe actions which happen to oneself. to dress oneself to wash oneself to brush one’s hair to think to oneself to perjure oneself to forgive oneself In technical terms, a reflexive verb is one in which the subject and direct object are the same
5
Reflexive Verbs in French Again, these verbs describe actions that happen to oneself. s’habiller se laver se brosser les cheveux se dépêcher (to hurry) se pardonner (to forgive oneself) s’occuper de (to busy oneself with, to take care of) In French, the reflexive pronoun is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. It cannot be left out as sometimes occurs in English.
6
Pronominal Voice The pronominal voice is much more common in French than in English - many French verbs that require the pronominal voice are equivalent to the active voice in English. French has three types of pronominal verbs: reflexive verbs reciprocal verbs idiomatic pronominal verbs There are two steps in conjugating pronominal verbs. First, take the reflexive pronoun se, change it to agree with the subject of the verb, and place it directly in front of the verb. Then, as with all verbs, conjugate the infinitive according to whether it's an -er, -ir, -re, or irregular verb. Elle se brosse les dents. She's brushing her teeth. Vous vous levez tard. You get up late.reflexive pronoun
7
Identifying Reflexive Verbs In French, reflexive verbs are conspicuous due to their reflexive pronouns. In the infinitive form, the reflexive pronoun is always se. se regarder se préparers’en aller The se contracts to s’ before a vowel Just as you must conjugate the verb, you must also “conjugate” the reflexive pronoun je = menous = nous tu =tevous = vous il = seils = se elle = seelles = se
8
Placement of pronouns In French, the reflexive pronoun always precedes the verb. Je me réveille. Elle se brosse les dents. Nous ne nous dépêchons pas. Ils ne s’occupent pas.
