Definition of Service Learning Service-learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students: 1) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified on- and off-campus community needs and 2) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility http://www2.byui.edu/ServiceLearning/subpages/fg definition.htm http://www2.byui.edu/ServiceLearning/subpages/fg definition.htm

Benefits of Service learning for Students Young people gain access to the range of supports and opportunities (or developmental assets) they need to grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. One study of youth civic activism found that these settings had particular strength in cultivating youth and community involvement (Lewis-Charp et al., 2003). Increased sense of self-efficacy as young people learn that they can impact real social challenges, problems, and needs. Higher academic achievement and interest in furthering their education.

What did I do for Service Learning? For my service learning project I worked a benefit golf tournament. At the tournament I helped move auction items, tables, chairs, and assisted with the beverage cart. The project was a very interesting yet fun Service Learning project.

What did I Gain from my Experience? The golf tournament helped me meet new people in the community. Not people my age, but people that are older and know the ropes of Valdosta. The project also enlightened me on how much is really put into a big event such as the golf tournament.
