2 Election of 1932 -Franklin Roosevelt  Governor of NY Attitude of “Can-Do” instead of “Do-Nothing” -Pledged a New Deal for the people 1. Relief for the needy 2. Economic recovery 3. Financial Reform  Hoover remain a lame duck or several months  Banking system was in a crisis, production fell, economy worsened

3 “Only Thing To Fear” -1932 Inauguration Speech “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself” -Public Relations - excellent in promising reform/relief -Fireside Chats: these were given nightly/weekly by FDR, described his programs & gave progress reports on economy

4 A Call to Action -Progressive programs Experiment with solutions -Group Effort Eleanor Roosevelt - wife Brain Trust = select group of advisors: professors, lawyers, and journalists -1 st 100 Days: period after inauguration from March 9- June 16 1933 -Congress passed 15 major pieces of New Deal Legislation -All greatly expanded the federal government’s role in the economy!!!***********

5 First New Deal - Designed for recovery and relief - Deficit spending- putting the nation in debt in order to spend it on programs that helped the nation -pump priming -Bank Holiday- closed all banks to prevent future withdraws – all those that were safe were allowed to reopen- increased confidence in nation’s banks -FDIC= insured deposits -SEC= regulate stock market

6 Alphabet Soup -FDIC Federal Depositors Insurance Corporation - Insured individual bank accounts less than $5,000 -SEC Securities and Exchange Commission Oversee Stock Market’s Activity -PWA Public Works Administration Created jobs on govt. projects -CWA Civil Works Administration Provided work in federal jobs

7 Alphabet Soup -TVA Tennessee Valley Authority Built dams providing jobs and electric power to region -CCC Civilian Conservation Corp Young men to work building roads, parks, planted trees, STATE PARKS -AAA Agricultural Adjustment Act Raise crop prices by lowering production CCC built thousands of roads and trails in our nation parks, but esp. helped NC – Blue Ridge Parkway!

8 National Recovery Administration= (NRA) Set prices on many products to ensure fair competition - Competing business leaders would meet to set standards on wages, prices, and no child labor

9 Dust Bowl -great drought had hit the lower plains -mid 1930’s wind storms started -farms destroyed -many people migrate to the west migrant farm workers “Okies”- nickname of migrants -”Grapes of Wrath” John Steinbeck- wrote book about migrants who took Route 66 to California The Grapes of Wrath???? A Little Comic Relief……
