Life Expectancy The US life expectancy if 77.5 years The longer you live; You add years Examples: If you reach 65, you can expect another 18.4 years (83.4) If you reach 75, you can expect another 11.8 years (86.8) Women tend to live longer 75 year old women can expect to reach 87.6 75 year old man can expect to reach 85.5 These are only average…Not the rule!!!! Brief Descriptions of Changes Skin – becomes thinner, drier, tougher, and wrinkled; less fat under the skin which results in becoming more sensitive to heat and cold Muscle – become weaker and strength decreases Bone – become more brittle and more likely to break, especially women Heart and Circulation – Blood vessels become thicker from cholesterol deposits, which makes the blood circulation difficult

Brief Descriptions of Changes Respiratory- lungs are not as elastic and cannot hold as much air, which leads to a shortness of breath Digestive System- most problems will result from poor eating habits; a longer time is need for ingestion Nervous System- slowing of nerve cells in the brain result in slower reflexes and reactions

Brief Description of Changes Vision- the lens and pupil size will change, sharpness and judgment of depth /height of objects will decrease Hearing- ~30% of all seniors will experience significant hearing loss Touch and Dexterity- hands are not used with as much ease and accuracy Balance - slower movements, poor posture, dizziness Taste and Smell – Taste buds decline, common smells are difficult to identify Exercise- walking, stretching, dancing, chair exercises

PREVENT FALLS IN YOUR HOME… Install night lights in hallways Install Grab Bars in Bathrooms No-slip mats in bathtub or shower Remove throw–rugs Move furniture from the center of rooms Bring items to lower shelves Avoid leaving doors to closets open Avoid bed covers reaching the floor
