Mindsets The New Psychology of Success Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D.

The view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life. FixedGrowth

Fixed Mindset Believe your qualities are carved in stone – It creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over.

Growth Mindset Based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts.

Fixed Mindset If at first you don’t succeed, you probably don’t have the ability Quickly fear challenge and devalue effort Make excuses Blame Have higher levels of depression

Growth Mindset The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well Allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

Our Students I can’t do it. It’s too hard. I’m too stupid. What if I’m wrong? I suck at math. He made me do it. It’s not my fault. That’s impossible. I’m no good at that.

Where do Mindsets come from?

Messages about Success and Failure I’d better quit studying or they won’t think I’m brilliant. Look at the drawing. Mark, are you the next Picasso or what? You are so brilliant, you got an A without even studying! If I don’t learn something quickly, I’m not smart. I shouldn’t try drawing anything hard or they’ll see I’m no Picasso. You learned that so quickly! You’re so smart!

Bullying: Fixed Mindset Bullying is about judging and establishing who is more worthy or important. The more powerful kids judge the less powerful kids. Fixed mindset: Some people are superior and some are inferior. And the bullies are the judges.

Mindsets play out in… School Sports Workplace Relationships
