Why Need to use existing terminologies rather than develop / maintain our own Availability of well maintained/structured terminologies Improve consistency and quality of terminology content in HL7 products

Terms of Reference Advice on acceptability of terminological resources proposed for use Maintain relationship with external terminology providers (e.g.. IHTSDO) Develop and maintain procedures for external terminology use in HL7

Steps for Work Groups Choose a terminology to suit purpose – Is content available? IF YES – USE IT IF NO (and you know the system you need e.g. SNOMED CT) request content from – IF NATIONAL – National Release Centre – IF THAT OPTION UNAVAILABLE – HL7 Terminology Authority OTHERWISE OR NOT SURE – Seek help from HL7 Terminology Authority

Getting Help! 1.Vocabulary Facilitators – Do you have / need one? – Additional training being developed /offered – Route to assistance from Vocabulary WG members 2.Contact HL7 Terminology Authority (HTA) - EARLY – Help with determining which terminology to use – Request modifications/additions to SNOMED CT – Processes for other terminologies will come later. – HTA Wiki – for general advice and guidance – Contact by emailing HTA@HL7.org
