M2M Applications Small But Growing: M2M only 2% of all data plans in 2010 (up 46%) Consumers Driving Demand: Consumer electronic devices account for most M2M growth in North America and Europe, especially e-readers and personal navigation devices Growth Varies by Industry: - Transportation is the largest industry (and still growing) Healthcare and Security applications overcoming privacy concerns Emerging industries include Digital Signage and Metering Interesting to note that off all the data plans out there, only 2% are non-phone devices. Even in M2M, consumer good still driving the growth – e-readers like Kindle and Personal Navigation Devices. Among business applications, Transportation continues to be the largest vertical, and still growing at double digit rates - IMS Research forecasts modules used in automotive market will have a 31% CAGR during the forecast period. Growth is being supported by government regulations. While the overall outlook is bright, concerns over the cost, reliability, and security of cellular technology will limit uptake of cellular modules in some vertical markets for the near term. Markets including security and factory automation are likely to rely on wired connectivity as well as alternative wireless options for a good portion of their M2M communications. At the same time, healthcare, a market with great potential for cellular modules, must overcome a series of privacy and liability concerns before it can reach a larger market size. Diverse industries, ranging from metering to digital signage, are becoming more reliant on cellular technology as a means to transmit vital information. Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. Confidential

Cellular Connectivity What’s fueling the growth?
Government funding Dropping technology prices Reduced connectivity rates from cellular carriers Increased availability of cellular networks worldwide Regulatory compliance 291.4 Million Forecast is for rapid growth in the M2M market, fueled by worldwide economic recovery, leading to free cash for investment in R&D. It’s becoming more affordable to employ cellular connectivity as technology prices drop and data plans become more competitively priced. Carriers are investing in network infrastructure around the globe, and see M2M as an area of high growth over the next several years. Government initiatives are catching up with the technology. In the Automotive industry, stolen vehicle tracking in Brazil and emergency call systems in Europe are forecast to become mandatory as a result of government regulations. Pending legislation in the EU, known as eCall, would be particularly significant as it would drive the penetration rate of cellular modules in new vehicles in Europe to 100%. As recently as May 4th, Deutsche Telekom and Gemalto announced that BMW automobile is embedding their Machine-to-Machine (M2M) solution in its latest car models to enable emergency call (eCall) services. Enabling Cellular Connectivity
Successful development relies on multiple business disciplines: Hardware – Software – Certifications – Carrier Approvals – Manufacturing Organizational Considerations: • Organizational Capabilities • Development Budget and Timeline • Volume Expectations • Total Cost of Ownership/ROI Expectations • Application Flexibility/Roadmap • Network Coverage Requirements • Regulatory Considerations Cellular connectivity needs are growing rapidly. As more businesses turn to cellular connectivity, companies like Multi-Tech are looking for ways to help aid the application development and deployment process. Successful cellular application development requires expertise in multiple areas: Hardware Engineering – the integration of the radio, peripherals and sensors Software Development – depending on the hardware, may require proprietary vendor programming language Regulatory Certifications – numerous certifications such as UL, FCC Carrier Approvals – End-application approval from every carrier required for deployment Manufacturing – such as the production equipment and QC testing, provisioning and logistics Missteps in any of these key areas can drive up development costs and cause significant delays in time to market. When approaching the development of an M2M application, it’s good to start with an assessment of key development factors: • Organizational Capabilities – internal expertise in these key areas or need to partner or outsource? • Development Budget and Timeline – Usually inversely related, but budget is usually the bigger consideration for smaller organizations • Volume Expectations – Does the quantity justify in-house capability or contract manufacturing? • Total Cost of Ownership and ROI Expectations – Which is more important, the total development expenses to minimize the BOM or per unit profit? • Application Flexibility (roadmap, legacy equipment, environment, peripherals, etc.)? – Will the application need to upgrade with technology? Is there legacy equipment to retrofit, or tough environmental conditions? Perhaps the applications are location specific or may require different sensors or peripherals over time. • Network Coverage Requirements: How many carriers will be needed? Each adds to the coost and complexity of the project. For instance, our customer Level Devil monitors storage tanks in very remote locations and requires a variety of carriers to meet their coverage needs. • Regulatory Considerations: Such as Medical Device, Our customer Physio-Control needs external communication equipment so don’t they have to pay for expensive recertification of their devise because of a change to the modem. Having assessed the organization and the application, it’s time to consider the options. Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. Confidential

Options for Cellular Development Finding the Right Fit
This slide shows three different options for cellular development: Using a component (module) to build their own custom solution Buy an existing embedded component (MultiConnect OCG-E) to host their application and incorporate into a new or existing hardware design Buy an existing device (MultiConnect OCG-D) to host their application Many organizations jump straight to the build option. While this solution delivers a highly customized application and potentially the lowest BOM cost, it also requires the most up-front investment and takes the longest time to develop. The high degree of customization may also limit the flexibility of the solution to adopt to changes in the application over time. For this path to be the best option, the organization would need a have or be able to afford a high degree of expertise in all the key disciplines, large volume expectations and significant development resources. Another option is to purchase a cellular modem to embed within or attach externally to the application. This is the area where Multi-Tech has consistently delivered valued to our customers over the years by providing communication devices that are already approved by the carriers as end-products and have the required certifications. Multi-Tech makes the investment once, and many customers benefit from the cost savings and improved time to market. However, customers still need to design their own application hardware and software, and complete safety testing on the end product, which may still require significant development resources and in house expertise and still presents a barrier to entry for smaller organizations or more niche applications within larger organizations. In listening to the needs of customers with small volumes or niche applications, we’ve often heard the questions “Can I just host my application on your hardware?”, “Can you help us with manufacturing support?” or “Do you have software development options?”. Those needs lead us to the creation of the MultiConnect Open Communications Platform (OCG-D and OCG-E). The MultiConnect OCG-D is ideal for organizations that have software competencies and are looking for a proven hardware platform to host their custom application. The MultiConnect OCG-E is ideal for organizations that have software and hardware competencies and are looking to embed their application and cellular connectivity on a new or existing hardware design. In either case, Multi-Tech has significantly removed the barriers to cellular enablement, by offering a proven hardware solution - just add software. This scenario shows a new application being built and deployed on the MultiConnect OCG, but if you had an existing application to port over, your application could literally be ready to deploy in minutes, not months.
