With “like” denominators: 1)add/subtract across the top. 2)Leave the bottom alone. Ex: 2 + 3 = 5 6 6 6

If you have an improper fraction for your answer, switch to a mixed number. Ex: 9 becomes 1 4 5 5 ( Denominator stays the same, then ask how many times your denominator goes into your numerator and that becomes your whole number. What ever is left to reach you original numerator becomes your new numerator.)

Reduce to simplest form/lowest terms: 1)Try to divide the denominator by the numerator or 2)If both numbers are even, divide by 2 or 3) If both numbers end in 0 or 5 divide by 5 ex: 4 becomes 1 12 3

3+ 1 =6 - 2 = 8 + 2 = 4 4 9 9 3 3 19 - 4 =12 + 4 = 9 – 1 = 20 20 13 13 10 10 16 =18 =7 =12 = 16 = 3 6 2 9 4

Find a common denominator Strategies: a)multiply the 2 denominators together to find a common one; then make the fractions equivalent Ex: 2 + 3 becomes 2 (x5) = 10, 3 (x3) = 9 3 5 3 (x5)= 15 5 (x3) = 15 So: 10 + 9 = 19 which is 1 4 15 15 15 15

Strategies: b) See if you can make one denominator equal to the other Ex: 3 + 1 I can multiply 3 by 4 to make it equal to 12 12 3 So: 1 ( x4) = 4 then 3 + 4 = 7 3 (x4) 12 12 12 12

Strategies: c) Use your agenda and compare multiples. *Always remember that if you have an improper fraction to switch to a mixed number and reduce to lowest terms.

1 + 5 = 5 - 1 = 1 + 1 = 2 8 6 2 4 3 4 - 1 = 3 + 1 = 1 - 5 = 6 3 5 2 6

Work on Text pages 188 – 189 questions 1 to 10 Once done, work on text pages 197 – 198, questions 1 to 9.
