8. Fewer trees killed Less to carry around More precise—don’t have to decipher handwriting Ability to use questionnaire in multiple languages Data entry instant—huge time saver; no entry errors. No need for internet or network connectivity while in the field—can conduct surveys in remote areas. One phone can hold thousands of surveys (with limited photo and video) Surveys can be uploaded from any location, which means enumerators can be spread out across a large geographic area and all their surveys could be uploaded to one server and combined into one worksheet for analysis back at headquarters. Ability to create maps Ability to use photos and videos as a part of a survey. Why would anyone want to move from a paper survey to a smart phone survey? Geo-Spatial Smap stores all of its data in a relational database with geospatial extensions PostGIS This allows geospatial queries to be made on the data – For example: Find the closest survey point to this road. Data can be exported in geospatial formats such as ESRI shape files GIS systems can connect directly to the Smap database and can be used to perform geospatial analysis on the data © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd19

Java-Rosa and ODK compatibility Smap, mostly, conforms to the standard interfaces specified by these open source projects This allows other tools that conform to these standards to be used interchangeably with Smap Some examples – odkCollect, the ODK android client works can be used instead of fieldTask – Smap uses the ODK xlsform tool to transform survey definitions in a spreadsheet format into Xforms used on the phones Other tools could be used although they may require some adjustments to be made to the Smap Server – J2ME data collection tools – ODK Briefcase © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd21
