3 3 SHOCK Stage 1: ShockReactionComments As rumours circulate, individuals experience shock and disbelief. They do not want to do anything about the situation. Immobilisation 1.There’s nothing I can do. 2.I cannot believe this is happening.

4 4 DENIAL Stage 2: DenialReactionComments/Questions As the change become clearer, individuals try to fit in the change with their own personal position and may try to believe that it will not affect them. Minimisation 1.What is it that I am not facing? 2.What is the worst thing than can happen if I face this? 3.What is the worst thing that can happen if I don’t? 4.What am I assuming that makes me turn away from this?

5 5 AWARENESS Stage 3: AwarenessReactionComments/Questions As reality begins to dawn staff may feel alienated and angry, feelings of a lack of control of events overtake people and they feel depressed as they try to reconcile what is happening with their own personal situation. Depression 1.This is unfair. 2.This should not be happening. 3.Why is this happening to me?

6 6 ACCEPTANCE Stage 4: Acceptance ReactionComments/Questions The lowest point in self-esteem finally sees people starting to accept the inevitable. Fear of the future is a feature of this stage. Letting go 1.I have to go along with this. 2.I have to face this situation. 3.Will I still have my job? 4.What will happen to my position? 5.Will I receive training where necessary?

7 7 TESTING Stage 5: Testing ReactionComments/Questions Individuals begin to interact with the change, they start to ask questions to see how they might work with the change. Exploration 1.When will training take place where necessary? 2.Who will support us through this change?

8 8 SEARCHING Stage 6: Searching ReactionComments/Questions Individuals begin to work with the change and see how they might be able to make the change work for them – self esteem begins to rise. Search for meaning. 1.Things happen for a reason. 2.There’s good that will come out of this situation.

9 9 INTEGRATION Stage 7: Integration ReactionComments The change is understood and adopted within the individual’s own understanding – they now know how to work with it and feel a renewed sense of confidence and self esteem. Internalisation 1.This change has brought opportunities for us. 2.Training has empowered us to effect the changes.
