“SIMONE is Europe's leading standard software package for the simulation and optimization of gas transport and distribution” “Network Manager is an ABB product for control of electrical networks and oil/gas pipeline networks”.

SIMONE SIMONE features a wide range of functions belonging in general into three main groups: Simulation of dynamic processes and steady states Real-time simulation for network control and dispatching Optimization of the gas transport process and of transport system development SIMONE offers a standardized solution of interface to SCADA systems ensuring short development and set-up of on-line applications.

Network Manager ABB’s Network Manager has following typical functional areas: SCADA: System Control and Data Acquisition HMI: Human Machine Interface over Operator Consoles IDES: Integrated Data Engineering System Remote Terminal Communication UDW: Utility Data Warehouse Additional Applications Connection to Office - World Connection to external computers and other control centres ABB has implemented a CORBA subset of ORB (Object Request Broker) based Interface called SIDL.

Simone offers an API for the access of SCADA data from external systems and for the export of Simone calculation results. This Simone API consists of a set of routines supporting access to SIMONE data. These routines are available in form of a Windows DLL and as UNIX shared library. The routines need to be embedded in an image that will be run under control of SIMONE in the SIMONE Node.

ABB has implemented “Network Manager IDL” Framework, or SIDL, as a true subset of CORBA ORB and according to OMG IDL v2.3 specification, and CORBA C++ language mapping specification. An ORB (Object Request Broker) is used to define interfaces between applications. ORB is developed in the worldwide Object Management Group (OMG), where ABB is a member SIDL is designed to be high performance, have high availability (e.g. redundant LANs) and easy to use.

Interface: State Reconstruction
"State Reconstruction" is a simulation function working on real time data input from SCADA. "State Reconstruction" cyclically estimates the current real network state as good as possible. It works on the latest network state, i.e. the results of its own previous run, plus the current values from SCADA for the relevant measurements and device states. The results are calculated values for flow and input and output pressure values for each pipe element. Calculated (reconstructed) values are sent back to SCADA system for presentation, event processing, archiving, further calculations, …

Example of Redundancy Solution Network Manager uses its standard “Redundant Computer Communication” methods ABBClient uses SIDL, which “knows” which SCADA server is on-line GASSrv uses SIDL: Communicates with only one client which is allowed to update data in the SCADA. The principle is “First Come First Served”. The GASSrv checks, if there is a client request within a specified time. In case there is none, an alarm message is generated. On SIMONE side, the “Redundancy Group” concept is used.

"Look Ahead" is actually doing the same as "State Reconstruction" but for several points of time in the future. The calculation time period can be anytime in the future. Typical cases are "now-time" to the end of the day or the next day. "Look Ahead" produces an output data vector for each node.
