3 1. Internship elective Offered to: Senior year BSIM students Master’s students DBA students

4 Why is this an elective?

5 Requires 3 quarters! Enroll in CIBU 480/680: Q1: Resume writing Interviewing Researching opportunities, Networking & attending events

6 Q2: Land internship Set schedule with supervisor Complete paperwork Begin working Continue to attend class (2 hours, every other week)

7 Q3: Continue & complete assignment Continue to attend class (2 hours, every other week) Final Report and paper

8 Minimum 120 hours Consider distance- Do you have a car, or depend on public transportation? Consider your career goals- Industry? Function? Global? Consider San Diego’s economy Small-to-mid-size companies

9 You will earn 5 credits, no payment involved

10 2. OPT elective Optional Practical Training Offered to: Any student who completes program of 3 consecutive quarters minimum Must have passed all classes Can be paid (or not) Should be full-time, may be part-time

11 Cost involved: $380.00 to DHS (Dept of Homeland Security) $100.00 CIBU administration fee

12 Documents involved: All I-20’s you’ve been issued I-94 number www.cbp.gov/I94 Passport, F-1 visa 2 passport photos I-765 document (CIBU will provide link)

13 Timeline involved: Apply 90 days prior to graduation Receive EAD card, graduate Begin one year OPT anywhere within 60 days of graduation End working by date on EAD card Must begin working within 90 days of EAD date

14 Reporting involved: Must let DSO know: Name and address of company Name and contact info of supervisor Position title Start date

15 Reporting involved: Must let DSO know: If, upon receipt of EAD card you see different dates than on original I-20, get re-print of I-20 from DSO!!

16 First step: Attend workshops: Resume Writing Interviewing practice Researching and networking Make use of all resources Get started on job search!

17 Second step: Make appointment with DSO: Request OPT packet of information Make appointment (allow an hour!) Get passport photos Gather all documents

18 Third step: Attend appointment: Complete paperwork Send packet to USCIS Keep “Return Receipt Requested” Await EAD card

19 Go out and get a great job!

20 Be sure to report to DSO!

21 3. CPT elective Curricular Practical Training Offered to: Two-year BSIM students (at beginning of senior year) Masters students at beginning of second quarter DBA students at beginning of second quarter

22 Must: Earn GPA of 3.0 in Q1, and maintain throughout Attend CIBU workshops to ensure proper: Resume and cover letter Network and researching Interviewing and follow up

23 Must: Work a minimum of 120 hours Continue to attend all classes Finish 2 weeks prior to graduation Submit a final report, from both student and employer Can: Get credit for Business Internship 480/680 Still get OPT if worked less than 20 hours per week

24 Documentation involved: From Student: Name and address of company Name and contact info of supervisor Position title Start date Essay: Why this training will be beneficial to pursuit of business degree

25 From Employer: Position Description Work agreement Get this document from CIBU website http://cibu.edu/students/working-in-the-u-s/

26 From Faculty Member: Specific Letter of support and recommendation

27 From Administration: I-20 Provide admin. with copies of all docs

28 Upon completion: Final report from: -you -supervisor -give to admin
