Tuesday December 4, 2007SNC1D | A. Manaktola Ohm’s Law Quiz – take up What are the coordinates for the two points? A(0,0) B(0.8,4) What is the difference in the y coordinates between A and B? RISE  4 – 0 = 4 V What is the difference in the x coordinates between A and B? RUN  0.8 – 0 = 0.8 A SLOPE = RISE = 4 RUN 0.8A SLOPE = 5 OHMS A B

Tuesday December 4, 2007SNC1D | A. Manaktola Ohm’s Law Quiz – take up 2) An ammeter measures how many coulombs of charge passes through a point per second. 3) The above circuit is a series circuit, and the voltmeter and ammeter are all connected in series. 4) 1 Ohm = 1 Volt/Ampere TRUE FALSE TRUE

Tuesday December 4, 2007SNC1D | A. Manaktola A The higher the voltage drop across a bulb, the brighter the bulb will shine. Suppose the battery is 6V. What will be the voltage drop across each bulb? In series…In parallel… B 3V 6V

Tuesday December 4, 2007SNC1D | A. Manaktola Today’s Circuit AB Which light bulb will be brighter? B As more bulbs are added in series, the voltage drop is “shared” among the loads. Therefore, the more bulbs you add, the dimmer each of the bulbs will be. Bulbs connected in parallel do not “share” the voltage drop. The voltage drop across the battery is the same as the voltage drop across each of the loads in the circuit. 3V 6V

Tuesday December 4, 2007SNC1D | A. Manaktola Let’s Try it!

Tuesday December 4, 2007SNC1D | A. Manaktola Summary Series CircuitParallel Circuit Voltage Drop V across each load is LOWER than V across the battery. V total = V 1 + V 2 + V 3 … V across each load is THE SAME as V across. V total = V 1 = V 2 = V 3 … Current The current flowing through each load is THE SAME. I total = I 1 = I 2 = I 3 … As more loads are added, the current flowing through each load DECREASES. I total = I 1 + I 2 + I 3 … V = Voltage drop, or Electrical Potential Difference ** Note: We are assuming the loads in the circuit are identical

Tuesday December 4, 2007SNC1D | A. Manaktola Stay tuned… To find out what happens to RESISTANCE in series and parallel circuits
