SCO A4: Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between fractions and division.
3
What does 16 divided by 3 mean? Give a story problem that would demonstrate this mathematical sentence. How can a fraction circle be used to solve this problem? What is the answer? For the fraction 2/3, how many items are being shared? How many people are sharing the items? 2/3 is the amount each person would get when 3 people share 2 items. The fraction 8/3 tells how many groups of 3 are in 8 items. Student Activities: An Introduction
4
A4.1 There were three pizzas left from the class party. Everyone agreed that the organizing committee would share what was left. What part of the pizzas would each of the four members receive if the pizzas were divided equally? Student Activities
5
What fraction of a hexagon does a blue rhombus represent? Put together 11 of these rhombuses to make hexagon shapes. Tell why another name for 14/3 is 4 and 2/3. Why can you think of it as 14 divided by 3. A4.2 Use pattern blocks to explain how you know that 17/3 (seventeen – thirds) is the same as 5 and 1/3 (five and one-third). Student Activities
6
A4.3 Find the mystery numbers: Clue: I divided one number by another number and the result was 2 and ½. What might the two numbers have been? What other combinations would also give a quotient of 2 and ½? Student Activities
7
A4.4 Draw two different pictures of squares to show 4/5 (four-fifths). One of your pictures should represent part of a whole; however, the second picture should show sharing. Create a word problem for each of these situations and their pictures. Student Activities
8
A4.5 Examine the picture below and then tell who is correct: John or Mark. Be ready to explain your thinking. John states, “That picture shows 5/4.” Mark disagrees and suggests, “No, that picture represents 5/8.” Student Activities
9
A4.6 You have a weekend job watering the neighbour’s plants. How many cans of water would you need to water nine plants if each plant needs ½ can? Draw a model to show your answer. How many cans would you require if each plant needed only one-third of a can? Student Activities
10
A4.7 What is the mixed number name for 16/3? Use a pictorial model to explain why you would divide 16 by 3 to find the mixed number name for 16/3. Student Activities
11
A4.8 Work in a small group to complete this activity: Draw a fraction from the bag. In your group, cooperate to think of a “division” skit to act out your fraction. Perform your skit. The rest of the class will try to guess your fraction. Student Activities

“Wow, I just learned the most exciting things about the relationship between fractions and division. I can hardly wait to call all of my friends!”
