3 Challenge Question How should unwanted household hazardous materials be disposed? – Carefully and safely – Recycling center – Special waste collection

4 Background One way to reduce the risk of household hazardous materials is to dispose of them when they are no longer needed. How can you handle and get rid of them without harming yourself, others, or the environment?

5 Vocabulary Hazardous: – Material dangerous to living things Corrosive – Chemical causing destruction or harm Flammable – Easily ignited and burned Toxic – Poisonous, sometimes deadly

6 Hypothesis: IF…THEN How should unwanted household hazardous materials be disposed? If unwanted household materials are disposed of carefully, then living things and the environment will be safe from harm. Do NOT just throw these unwanted household hazardous materials out or put down the drain

7 7A4 Homework: Home Hazards On separate paper, write your Name, Hour, Date, and Title (Home Hazards) at the top. Divide the page into three columns by drawing two lines down. Title the columns: – Brand Name, Ingredients, Hazards Find 4 hazardous items at home and read the label. Write down its Name, the Hazardous Ingredients, and its Hazards/Precautions.

8 Data Summary: Act 1 Cleaning products may be hazards/dangers. Items once thought to be safe may now be known to be harmful. Should be identified and disposed of properly. – Batteries – Lead paint – Mercury thermometers – Asbestos insulation

9 Data Summary: Act 2 We often buy hazardous materials for home use without thinking about proper disposal. Instead of pouring it down the drain or throwing it away, take it to a Recycling Center or Special Waste Collection Center where it will be properly identified and disposed.

10 Analysis, page A18, #1-4 On separate paper, answer each in 1 paragraph. 1.How can household products be harmful? 2.Name 1 product that can no longer just be thrown away. Explain why not. 3.Where in people’s homes do you think they have the most potentially hazardous items? 4.Why do you think there are now more regulations about the use and disposal of hazardous items than 20 to 40 years ago?
