Unit 26 Caring for Individuals with Additional Needs

Lesson Objectives To define choice, independence and empowerment and relate these to the experiences of people with additional needs. To describe a Person Centred Plan. To write a person centred plan and describe your experience of doing this. To describe the common assessment framework. Small group activity What does choice independence and empowerment – define What do choice independence and empowerment mean for you? – put onto a sheet of paper, brainstorm it. What do they mean for a person with additional needs – consider what you have put and then consider it from the point of view of a person with additional needs.

P4 assignment task You should produce a written profile of a carer for a person with additional needs. Within this profile you should include information that: Explains positive working practice that the carer should provide Informs about the level and type of service delivery from the carer that should be expected by a service user. Describes the types of support, aids and adaptations and principles of care that the carer should provide. When writing this profile you should approach the information from the perspective of the service user and what they should expect from a carer employed to support them with their additional needs.

M2 assignment task To achieve the M2 grade you should extend the information provided in your carer profile for P4 to discuss positive working practice with individuals with additional learning needs.

D1 Assignment task To achieve the D1 grade you should evaluate the information provided in P4 and M1 within your carer profile and evaluate working practices and their potential for breaking down barriers and improving the wellbeing and life chances of individuals with additional needs. Whole group brain storm to white board catagories of services Then types of services Students to take notes – give out slide 7 as a handout

Person Centred Planning
“Person centred planning is a process of learning about a person; who they are; what has happened to them; what is important to them; and what they want from life” Gates, 2007, p302. Ask the group what they think this is about. Predominantly in learning disability fields but can relate to all types of care. More detailed you will find in LD field. Individual task - planning

Five Key Features of PCP
The person is at the centre Family Members and friends are partners in planning The plan reflects what is important to the person The plan results in actions about life The plan results in ongoing listening learning and further action PCP has come from a shift away from the medical model of disability where goals and targets were defined by professionals and service users had no part in this planning – say about review meetings where service users had no part – imagine people planning for you and you not being able to have your say??? Shift in thinking about peoples strengths and not just their needs. Greater emphasis on self advocacy and the role of the person and their family not just professionals. Rooted in the values of inclusion, diversity, choice and empowerment. Not fixing people but thinking about how and individual chooses to live their life. Rooted in the 5 service accomplishments from normalisation and SRV

The Common Assessment Framework (CAF)
Shared assessment and planning framework for children’s services in local areas in the UK. Helps early identification of children’s additional needs and promotion of co-ordinated services to meet them. The assessment covers three domains: development of the child or young person parents and carers Family and environment Carried out by trained professionals in the children’s workforce settings.

Task In small groups nominate one person. This person will have a person centred plan. As a group you should contribute to drawing up a person centred plan for this person using the format provided. Once this is done you should feedback to the group how this experience felt and what you learned from it. Give out PCP formats Practice holding a PCP meeting with people that know them well. Should be in friendship groups. A test of how well you know each other.
