Lacey Act – 1900 The Lacey Act was drafted in 1900 Amendment years: 1969, 1981 1988 and Amendment years: 1969, 1981 (changed “willing” damage to “ knowing damage”),1988 and May 22, 2008, upon Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 expanding its protection to a larger range of plants/plant products. Lacey Act – Functions Introduced into Congress by Rep. John F. Lacey, of Iowa. Signed into law by President William McKinley on May 25, 1900CongressRep.John F. Lacey William McKinley Protects both plants and wildlife due to creation of civil and criminal penalties for a variety of violations. Act prohibits trade in plants, wildlife, fish that have been illegally sold, taken, and/or transported. Issues Affected: controlled and penalized the acts of illegal commercial hunting in the U.S. ; reduce the importation of non-native plant and animal species to protect local habitats; brought light on Gibson Guitars, which was using illegal wood.
